JEMAIL: Cronogue, John (MC1982) remembers Professor Dobbins

Dear John,

Certainly this must be the same Professor John Dobbins who taught Marketing and Advertising at Manhattan in the late 70’s and early 80’s?

Odd that there is no mention of that.

Professor Dobbins was a great favorite of the Business School students. He was certainly my favorite professor of my college experience and was a great influence on my career choice. If true, this is a great loss to the Manhattan College community and many will be deeply saddened. May he Rest in Peace.

Dr. Fenton has 30 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience, including over two decades at Amgen where he played an instrumental role in the development of the company into a global, fully-integrated, multi-billion dollar organization. Fenton’s broad background includes executive leadership roles in manufacturing, process development, sales and marketing, operations and quality control. About Amira

Founded in 2005 and headquartered in San Diego, Amira Pharmaceuticals is a small molecule pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and early development of compounds to treat inflammatory disease.

The company combines the rigor of a big pharmaceutical company with the ingenuity and energy of a small company, creating an environment for efficient and effective pre-clinical and clinical program decisions. Its scientific founders have successfully worked together for more than a decade and were pivotal in the discovery of a number of inflammatory drugs, including Singulair(R). The drug hunters at Amira are now actively leveraging their history of success to create high-value compounds for the future.

In February 2008, Amira Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline entered a global agreement for Amira’s FLAP inhibitor program. The deal follows positive phase 1 data from novel product candidate AM103 for the oral treatment of respiratory disease.

Amira has raised $40US million to date from investors including Novo A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark), Avalon Ventures (San Diego, CA), Prospect Ventures (Palo Alto, CA) and Versant Ventures (Menlo Park, CA). For more information, visit http://www.amirapharm.com.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares your grief at the death of someone who worked to make Jaspers what they could be. We are praying for our loyal helper and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. “No man is an island, entire of itself … any man’s death diminishes me”. We are sorry for your loss.

RIP

Wednesday, April 2

*** begin quote ***

Rest in Peace to Dr. Ross Pollack. He was the Director of the Specialized Resource Center at Manhattan College. He did a lot more great things than many of us were probably aware of, but I know that just from the little time I knew him, he was dedicated to MC and it’s students.

Dr. Pollack cared about his friends and through his programs, he helped all of those with special needs, those needing extra assistance with class, and someone like me who needed recommendations for graduate school. In the little time that I spent with Dr. Pollack, he always greeted me with a smile, while replacing “goodbye” with “if you ever need anything let me know.” And as soon as I did need something, he was there to help. I was fortunate enough to offer some help to others through Dr. Pollack’s program for three years, and he definitely embodied the La Sallian tradition of Manhattan College. So I’m sure that today, instead of saying goodbye to MC, he’s letting us all know if we need anything, he’s there.

Kevin Kahn on Redefining Mobility: Carry Small, Live Large

posted by Guest Blogger on April 01, 2008

Imagine a day when a single device small enough to fit in your pocket has the power of a laptop and can deliver a rich computing, telephony, media, gaming, and Internet experience. Imagine a day when this device knows your tendencies and preferences and can adapt and optimize its interfaces to match what you are doing at any point any time. Imagine a day when this device is not constrained as a standalone unit, but can dynamically become a hybrid combination of other computing and multimedia devices in close proximity. In the labs at Intel, we have been looking at what makes sense for mobility in the future – a vision we refer to as Carry Small, Live Large.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Dr. Kahn is an Intel Senior Fellow, the corporation’s highest technical position, and currently the Director of the Communications Technology Lab, a corporate advanced development and research lab responsible for radio, optical, and copper physical layer technologies, as well as higher level protocol work. Additionally, he helps drive communications strategies and policy for the corporation. Some of his primary current focuses are broadband access to the home, wireless LANs and PANs, spectrum policy, and related Internet issues. He currently serves on the Commerce Spectrum Advisory Committee, the FCC Technological Advisory Council, the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council, and on various academic advisory committees. Throughout his 30-year career with Intel, he has worked in system software development, operating systems, processor architecture, and various strategic planning roles. He has held both management and senior individual contributor roles. He holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics from Manhattan College, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Purdue University.

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) remembers Ross Pollack

Dear John,

Today’s NY Times (4/3/08) at page A25 has an Obituary for Dr. Ross Pollack. Dr. Pollack was one of the most caring, understanding men I have met over the years. He was able to do so much for those Manhattan students who needed some help, whether due to a long tern disability, or a short term problem. He made himself available at all times, even providing students with his home phone number. When ever I called him about a problem that a student was having, that I had learned about, he never failed to step in and usually was able to see to it that an appropriate accommodation was made.

He will be missed and it will be very difficult to fill his shoes.

May He Rest In Peace,

Mike

Old college co-horts of Siobhan’s will be making their way down to the fair city of Atlantic. Melissa Courage and Nick Kapetenakis of Manhattan College fame, are alledgedly coming down this weekend, and thats not all!

Matty Lynch will also be gracing the girls with his presence on Saturday night! Word is the whole entourage will be making a not-so-secret appearance at Game On on Saturday. We were starting to wonder if the girls have given up on their favorite hot spot, glad to hear some things never change!

As always, members of Young Atlantic City, Rhiannon and Tricia will be expected to attend.

Keep checking The Dunes for more updates!
