Dear John,
Thank you for the recent birthday greetings you sent me (73 and counting). It was very thoughtful of you and much appreciated. I also appreciate your having been a sponsor for one of my Addis Hope kids and hope you are in a position to do so again. Just for your information, I’m attaching something relating to what’s been happening with me this past year.
Fraternally,
Brother Greg Flynn

ATTACHMENT:
For me the year 2007 was one of some unpleasant surprises and many grace-filled moments. I returned to the States in September for my usual Addis Hope fund-raising activities and for a medical follow-up to the ocular shingles that I experienced in my right eye in May. Much to my surprise, it was discovered that the shingles was the result of low grade non-Hodgkins lymphoma behind my left eye, back of the tongue and lower back. So instead of a planned return to Ethiopia in November, I underwent six cycles of chemotherapy at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC, where my sister Kathleen works. She was able to arrange biopsies and chemo scheduling that made the ordeal so much easier. The grace-filled moments were witnessing the heroism -that’s the only way I can describe it- of the cancer-ridden patients I met and the loving care with which we were all treated by the hospital medical personnel. The long and short of it is that through the chemo and I was given a clean bill of health to return to Ethiopia with the stipulation that I return every six months for two years as follow-up. Special thanks to the Flynn/Maher clan and the CBA, Lincroft community who provided me extended hospitality and kept me in prayer.
I arrived back in Addis Ababa on the evening of September 9th 2008 to a very warm reception by the other member of my community, Brother Kassu Fantaye, and my Addis Hope lasallian Associate colleague, Ruth Girmay. The first inkling of a return to the Fourth World was being approached in the airport parking lot on this late cold and rainy evening by a bedraggled young mother and her two children looking for a few coins for food.
It is for such families that the Addis Hope program for kindergarten age children of street families was officially begun seven years ago. Ruth, has seen to it that after two years in the program more than 300 children who have graduated have been able to successfully compete for the limited number of places in Grade One in government schools. By the way, the latest graduation of 102 children took place on September 28, 2008. Over the years it has been the generosity of family, friends and benefactors that have enabled these children and their care-givers to have a new lease on life through education. More info can be found on our web site (www.addis-hope.com)
It comes as no surprise that the world financial crisis has impacted severely on countries like Ethiopia, which on the United Nations Human Development Index ranks 169 out of 177. In our case, the cost of the grain teff which makes up the daily hot meal we serve the Addis Hope children has risen from 100 Ethiopian dollars for 100 pounds to 1,200 dollars for the same amount. We also had to close one of our three centers due to the substantial increase in rent. This necessitated laying off two teachers, a cook and a guard and reducing the salaries of the staff. The 80 children who normally would be attending classes in that center will have to do without. To save rent cost, we also moved the Selihome Teacher Training program into one of the two remaining centers.
It is with the realization that most of the generous Friends of Addis Hope have also been affected by the financial crisis in one way or another that I still ask for your continued support. Without it the Addis Hope program would have to either close or be drastically reduced beyond what has already been done.

Travel Back to the 60s with Barry Drake
10/13/2008 –
An annual event in Penn State York’s free Cultural and Performing Artists series, Barry Drake, rock historian, returns to campus on Oct. 23 for his multimedia presentation “60s Rock: When the Music Mattered.” Travel back to the 60s at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. This free program, sponsored by the campus and the York Newspaper Company, is open to the public.
The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Supremes, the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, and yes, even The Monkees, were the sounds filling the airwaves through those turbulent years. The decade of the 60s was one of the most interesting periods in American history and through all of the good and bad times, it was the music that brought us together and sometimes tore us apart. The political turmoil, the social upheaval, the hippie movement, the Vietnam War and the generation gap were all reflected in the popular music of the day. “60s Rock – When The Music Mattered” will celebrate, examine, clarify and put into perspective one of the most exciting decades in music history.
Drake, often called a walking encyclopedia of rock & roll, is a graduate of Manhattan College and has been involved in the world of music since buying his first rock & roll record in 1954. He grew up in New York City and saw everyone from Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry at the Brooklyn Paramount in 1957, to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin at the Filmore in 1967. In 1965, Drake became a performer and songwriter and in 1970 was signed to Capitol Records. Since then, Drake has recorded three albums and has extensively toured the United States and Europe.
In 1984 Drake added rock & roll lectures to an already busy concert schedule. His lectures have become the most popular shows on college campuses. Drake is the five-time winner of the Campus Lecturer of the Year Award by The National Association for Campus Activities and the three-time winner of the Campus Lecturer of the Year Award by Campus Activities Magazine.
Drake combines his extensive knowledge of music and abilities as a dynamic entertainer in his multimedia presentation. Get ready to discover or rediscover the 60s with Drake at Penn State York. For more information on Drake visit his Web site at http://www.barrydrake.com/ . Liberal Catholic Bigotry Against Sarah Palin
By Joseph D’Hippolito
*** begin quote ***
The Catholic Left, which ostensibly advocates compassion and justice in the name of Jesus Christ, does not like Sarah Palin, and finds fault with her unwed 17-year-old daughter’s pregnancy, and even accuses her of apostasy.
Catholic Left notables Michael Sean Winters and Garry Wills are part of a campaign to destroy Palin. The Catholic Left wants to provide pseudo-theological cover for Catholic liberals who wish to vote for the Democratic ticket of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden. Obama supports legalized abortion while Biden, a Catholic, opposes the Magisterium’s teaching on abortion.
*** end quote ***
I can’t understand why, if the Church leaders won’t hold CINO politicians to account, the laity doesn’t. I just don’t understand! We say there’s a “right to life”, but we don’t vote that way. We purport to be followers. Some better than others. I’m not throwing any stones. But, on fundamental truths, where some one purports to be a Christian and votes for abortion, I think that a little attention is warranted. And, maybe, if not a “first stone”, then a gentle nudge up side the head, asking “what are you thinking?”.
So Palin gets denigrated, and Biden gets a pass?
So what are you thinking, and how will you vote. Feel free to answer silently. I really don’t want to know. It might make me even sadder.
