ProDigits – Individual Prosthetic Fingers Can Replace Any or All Fingers on a Hand

*** begin quote ***

Dr. Douglas G. Smith, a professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, agreed. “Motors are getting stronger and smaller, and the batteries are thinner and smaller, too,” he said, making it possible to fit mechanical components into the space formerly occupied by a finger.

[JR: You have to admire human ingenuity in solving the problem of their fellow men. All motivated by the “larger market”. Greed is good. It’s motivating. And, the paradox is that someone can only get rich by serving their fellow man. Amusing?]

“I’d definitely go,” said Rico Pickett, the Manhattan College guard who after a season that included a disciplinary suspension has declared but doesn’t have an agent. “I’m hoping for a legit shot of going to try out for a team, showing what I can do. Hopefully, somebody has interest.”

The concern over the new ruling is it simply does not afford time to gather information for a proper decision. Teams cannot talk to or work out players until April 29. Then players without agents have 13 days to decide: stay in the draft or withdraw. Compounding matters are NCAA rules forbidding players, under threat of eligibility loss, from missing class to visit NBA teams.

Entering the weekend, 63 underclassmen had declared, roughly half without agents. Last year, 104 declared, 55 withdrew. The largest batch was in 2005 when 110 declared and 50 withdrew. Projections are for a record of underclassmen declaring this year. Some suggest fears of an NBA labor lockout next year are fueling the declarations this year.

[JR: Unfortunately for these kids, (more like children than men). the NCAA ain’t looking out for them. It’s a racket with “student athlete” lipstick. These kids are raw material into the shredder that’s the NCAA. All to make money for the “schools”. At least baseball is honest enough to have the minor leagues. Anti-trust?]

Bill,

Hugh Biens starred at Manhattan Prep, a small school located on one floor of De La Salle Hall on the Manhattan College campus. Biens led the Jasper Prepsters to either a NYC title or the CHSAA final four, quite an achievement. The scuttlebutt was that Manhattan College recruited Biens but Georgetown’s pitch included a scholarship to law school. I assume that was within NCAA rules ’cause the Jesuits wouldn’t cross the ethics line, would they? The Christian Brothers closed Manhattan Prep around 1971 as they were running out of Brothers to staff the faculty.

JEMAIL: Moore, Kevin (MC1980) reports on Schreifer, Russ [MC1980] quote

Dear CIC,

In an article on the new Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, there is a quote from Russ Schreifer, a classmate from 1980 in the Weekly Standard, a magazine of political opinion. Russ is a political consultant for Gov. Christie. I am sure it can be accessed by going to http://www.weeklystandard.com.

The breadth of change proposed by Christie—“bold action now to reverse the direction we have taken for many years”—has surprised many New Jerseyans. He was less candid during the campaign, for a reason. Voters “wanted back then what he’s doing now,” said Russ Schriefer, Christie’s media consultant. “But he couldn’t do it now if he’d said it back then.”

ADMINISTRIVIA: Backup, backup, and backup

A Jasper recently found his laptop “smoked”. And, has no backup.

Wisdom, some wag said, is the ability to learn from other people’s mistakes.

I’ve had two drives, in corporate laptops, die on me. The corporate backup solution didn’t work. The hardware vendor replaced the drive. But I was screwed. I lost stuff I never recovered from. It hurt me professionally. I learned that lesson the hard way.

In order I’d recommend, Carbonite (60$/year), Apple Time Capsule (300$ one time), Mozy, or other backup solutions.

So, learn from his and my bad experience. It WILL happen to you. All disk drives fail. The only question is when?

Fore warned is fore armed.

Remember, you don’t have to pay tuition at the School of Hard Knocks, aka experience bad things yourself. You are permitted to “cheat” and avoid this particular “pothole on the road of life”.

YMMV!

[JR: The woman has a bigger signature and more web presence than I do. I’ll have to get working. For those that didn’t have FOUR years of Manhattan Prep Latin, (and other gibberish), AMDG is “Ad maiorem (or majorem) Dei gloriam” or “For the greater glory of God”. Now please keep that Jesuit propaganda out of a good Christian Brothers forum. Our Latin motto was: “Illegitimus non carborundum est” translated to “Mothers, don’t let your boys grow up to be lawyers.” and “Fathers, don’t let your daughters date Jasper injineers”. Either is acceptable. Or so I’m told by my classmates who passed Latin. And, Math. And, so many many other subjects.]

ENDNOTE: So what’s wrong with a “minimum wage”? Everything!

http://jewishworldreview.com/cols/williams041410.php3

Jewish World Review
April 14, 2010 / 30 Nissan 5770
Minimum Wage Cruelty
By Walter Williams

*** begin quote ***

One of the more insidious effects of minimum wages is that it lowers the cost of racial discrimination; in fact, minimum wage laws are one of the most effective tools in the arsenals of racists everywhere, as demonstrated by just a couple of examples. During South Africa’s apartheid era, its racist unions were the major supporters of minimum wages for blacks. South Africa’s Wage Board said, “The method would be to fix a minimum rate for an occupation or craft so high that no Native would likely be employed.” In the U.S., in the aftermath of a strike by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, when the arbitration board decreed that blacks and whites were to be paid equal wages, the white unionists expressed their delight saying, “If this course of action is followed by the company and the incentive for employing the Negro thus removed, the strike will not have been in vain.”

Tragically, minimum wages have the unquestioned support of good-hearted, well-meaning people with little understanding who become the useful idiots of charlatans, quacks and racists.

*** end quote ***

Good old Walter Williams, wish I was so smart.

I tumbled to the “minimum wage” scam back in the Hands Across New Jersey tax revolt. I asked myself why were the unions and gooferment workers so hot about increasing the minimum wage.

Were they concerned about “social justice” and the poor?

Yeah right. They were just being “Mother Teresa” about the poor.

Then, I got insight. They were jacking up their own salary. All the union and gooferment bureaucrat wage tables are anchored by the minimum wage. To misquote JFK, “A rising minimum wage raises all boats or union wages”. Or in this case, all wage tables.

So our selfless “public servants” were just voting themselves a raise.

Now let’s look at the “social justice” aspect or “minimum wage”. Is it moral or even “fair” to prevent some one to from earning something or forcing them onto the dole? What right do you, through the guns of gooferment, to prevent an honest bargain for labor that benefits the buyer and seller. Freely offered and accepted.

On a personal level, I will cite my cousin, the very “bad” elevator operator, (bad, in the sense of incompetent, how does one “lose” your elevator; basically a very nice person), who thanks to the FIRST federal minimum wage hike I remember in the late 60’s, lost “her” job. NYC buildings found it economical to change to automatic controls. And, gobs of people lost “their” jobs. In my cousin’s case, that was the last time she worked outside the home. Today, she’s still paying for that political diktat.

Work that can not be profitably done at below the minimum wage just doesn’t gets automated like the elevator, off-shored to overseas, or just doesn’t get done. People will figure out a “black market” in its place. As with any time the government sets a price floor, or ceiling, they ensure shortages, dislocations, and sub-optimum results.

“Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work.” Mother Teresa

Time to eliminate the minimum wage. Allow the poor the dignity of honest humble work. And, lower the overall cost to society of wages tied to a “minimum”.
