POSITRACTION: Chance meeting of two old soldiers

World War II Memories, and an Instant Connection
By COREY KILGANNON
Published: October 1, 2010

*** begin quote ***

And so two old soldiers, who stormed Normandy 66 years ago, had serendipitously crossed paths in a preoperation room at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Upper East Side, awaiting another daunting situation: open-heart surgery, which for the elderly can be especially risky.

In that room, they shared D-Day memories and realized “we could literally have been a mile away from each other,” Mr. Klein said.

Mr. Allegretti called it “a million-to-one shot” that he might run into another glider man from D-Day all these year later.

[JR: The Times calls it “serendipity”. I’d say the Universe, the Creator, or just a “Higher Power”, put these giants together to support each other again in another dangerous time. Hard to imagine them being afraid of a “little” operation. I’ll remember them when I need a little courage.]

JOBIT: Brush, Deacon Wesley J. “Wes” Jr.[MC???? RIP]

http://www.madison.com/obit/168853

Obituary for Deacon Wesley J. Jr. “Wes” Brush
Madison
Deacon Wesley J. Jr.

Deacon Wesley J. “Wes” Brush Jr. passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison on Nov. 5, 2010, following a life filled with many blessings, wonderful family and great friends.

Born in New York City on Feb. 29, 1920, Wes was the son of Wesley J. and Julia (Duggan) Brush. He attended Power Memorial Academy and graduated with a degree in business administration from Manhattan College. Wes enlisted in the Army the day after Pearl Harbor, subsequently earned a commission at the Infantry School and chose discharge in April 1946 with the rank of Captain. Service included two years in the European Theater of Operations where he was attached to General Eisenhower’s staff in the G-4 division of the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces. Military honors include the Order of Leopold awarded by the government of Belgium, together with the Croix de Guerre, avec palme, grade de chevalier.

On March 2, 1946, he was blessed in marriage to Eleanor L. Miller in New York City and they were subsequently graced by the births of daughter, Elizabeth and son, Thomas.

His career was in Catholic publishing from 1946 until his retirement in 1988, initially with the Bruce Publishing Company of Milwaukee, where he rose to the position of trade book publisher. Following the dissolution of Bruce, Wes was named executive editor of the Catholic Sun, the diocesan newspaper of Syracuse, N.Y.

In Syracuse, Wes served on several diocesan commissions and councils and was ordained in the first class of permanent deacons in 1978. Elected the first chairman of the deacon community, he was also appointed diocesan director of the program for the permanent diaconate.

In 1988, he and Eleanor retired from publishing and moved to Madison to be near to family here. For three years, he acted as the executive secretary of the association of Wisconsin Catholic Schools until its dissolution. Memberships included the Catholic Press Association, the Religious Publishers Group, the Eastern Church Goods Guild, the Syracuse Interreligious Council, Knights of Columbus Council #4527, and the Serra Club of Madison.

Incardinated (officially transferred) into the diocese of Madison in 1996 by Bishop William H. Bullock, he was assigned as pastoral associate to St. Mary’s Church in Pine Bluff and served there until his retirement from parish ministry in 1999. He was a member of the advisory board of the Catholic Herald, and was active in the development of the permanent diaconate program for the diocese.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth M. (Gerd) Petzke of Kelkheim, Germany; and son, Thomas H. Brush (Mary) of Madison; grandchildren, Thomas and Paul Martin Petzke, and Matthew and Alyson Brush; together with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; his parents; sisters, Elizabeth and Irene; and brother, John.

Greetings will be conducted at ST. MARIA GORETTI CHURCH in Madison at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 followed by mass at 11 a.m. Later, family and friends are invited to an Irish celebration and remembrance of Wes at Brocach Irish Pub in Madison from 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Special thanks are given to the wonderful staff and friends at St. Mary’s Care Center of Madison where Wes enjoyed the final year of his life in a very special, caring, and loving environment. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to St. Mary’s Care Center of Madison.

JEMAIL: Reinke, F. John (MC1968) any interest in a iPad version of Jasper Jottings?

Any interesting in a iPad version of Jasper Jottings?

As the inveterate tinkerer and the fat old white guy injineer who is incomparably bad, I was thinking of producing an anthology of Jasper Jottings. Like an annual summary. Go back as far as I can. Wonder if I can find the one’s I did from Compuserve?

Like a fool, I actually first sent Jaspers framed stories about their promotions. Never so much as a thank you note. But, I was young and crazy once upon a time.

It’s days like this when I have a crazy idea and I look back at all the ideas that “tanked” — you know that carefully constructed paper airplane that you’re just sure will set a new record and it takes your dreams nose first into the pavement to the hysterical laughter of all your high school classmates — too personal?

Anyway, before I spend a lot of time and attention doing it, I wanted to get some feedback.

Like my attempt to be James Patterson with “CHURCH 10●19●62″ http://www.itstartedinchurch.com, it probably wasn’t worth the effort to sell 800 copies. (It was a prodigious effort.) And it’s “failure” weighs heavily on any desire to “do it again”.

So to, I wonder what is worth the time, attention, energy, and effort.

Shoulda, coulda, and woulda! They will kill you.

So before I jump into anthologies and epubs and all that stuff, is there a demand for Jasper Jottings on the iPad?

JNEWS: Davolio, John [MC1963] a local “celebrity” in Dix Hills

Dix Hills Celebrities

The Neighborhood Files
From the Mound at Yankee Stadium to Otsego Park
Former NY Yankee and now a long-time Dix Hillian, John Davolio still enjoys the game.

*** begin quote ***

One name you might not recognize belonged to a 19-year-old boy who had just started his minor league career with the Yankees in 1955: John Davolio. Davolio played in the minors for the Yankees organization until 1962, his last year, when, at age 27, he was with the AAA Richmond Virginians.

*** and ***

Davolio said that back then, “Guys in suits came into the locker room and offered you contracts.” But Davolio gave up his Yankees contract to go to college—Manhattan College—to get his degree in civil engineering.

He got a job with Bethlehem Steel. “I was down in the mines, in the mills, and up in the skyscrapers and on the bridges.” And then they wanted him to go back to New York. He had grown up in a house in the Bronx, so he wanted to get a house on Long Island for his growing family, and that was when he discovered Dix Hills.

*** and ***

“I want to help them realize the value and importance of an education while possibly seeking a baseball career. I have told them already a dumb ballplayer will not survive above Little League. They need to take school seriously and study. Soccer, softball, basketball, tennis, etc. are all fine and dandy, but do not neglect your education. What you learn is yours; it becomes part of you and no one can take it from you unless you allow them. Someone may steal your sweater, jacket, shoes etc. but they cannot steal your knowledge.”

Davolio concluded, “I had my days in the sun and under the stars. Now, I am just trying to help today’s young ballplayers experience it too.”

We had wonderful times on the float. My father used to tie our old wind-up portable victrola to his head and swim out to the float with us, sometimes smoking his favorite cigar at the same time. Jim Murray, who was the captain of the Manhattan College Swim team and lived in New Jersey, would bring the 78 dance records out to the float and not one of them would get wet. Then, people used to sit on their front porch and just watch what was going on. We would dance to the music on the float on those hot summer nights.

This is real, this is now and this is what is working. These guys have an EXCLUSIVE patent (well five to be exact).

*** and ***

Why Invest in Debt Resolve

Every aspect of our lives has been transformed into an online system in the last three years. The average age of a credit card defaultee is 34 years old with $12K in debt. Debtors now fully understand online payments. Most defaultees have had jobs and extensive internet experience. Most lenders have email addresses for debtors which allows easy email contact, which is more direct and less expensive than phone or mail. Debt Resolve delivers a product that is a bidding platform. The auction model allows debtors to log on and essentially bid to resolve their debts.

MFOUND: reference to “Brother Holiday”

http://agebuster.wordpress.com/2010/11/11/nuns-and-other-clergy/

Nuns and other clergy

The teaching nuns and priests at my Catholic college got the short end of the stick. Like smart-aleck college brats, we poked fun at the Sisters, using epithets like heads of cloth and black wings. The clergy at Manhattan College in New York City where Henry went to school were also hard hit. One Brother, who was old and doddering, was called Brother Holiday, because the students expected a holiday on the day of his funeral. Another epithet Henry remembers:: Brother Skull, a monk who had a long, drawn face with deadly pallor and looked about to die. I haven’t found much fault with the teaching clergy –except for one thing: they failed to teach us mercy toward themselves.

[JR: I’d call this a Jasper blog except for the use of the word “monk” which is uncharacteristic for a Jasper. And, the lack of any confirmation of status. And, as far as “holiday”, I never heard that at the Prep or the College. And, I traveled in the circles where it would have been used if someone thought of it. Beside, I don’t EVER remember getting a “holiday” in either of the two MC “penal institutions”. Argh!]

Church vs. Adjunct Union
November 12, 2010
Scott Jaschik

*** begin quote ***

The irony, according to O’Donnell, is that the college is being questioned because it embraces people of other faiths. “[T]he fact that we are a welcoming, pluralistic community is being presented as proof that we cannot be an authentic Catholic college,” he says. “Questions about the number of brothers in various roles imply that the work of lay faculty, staff, and administrators is negligible in forwarding our mission, and betrays a complete incomprehension of a full generation’s hard and faithful work in passing forward the charism of religious orders to lay colleagues.”
