POSITRACTION: The Seventeen Evidences of a Lack of Humility

http://www.patheos.com/community/deaconsbench/2011/02/04/once-you-think-you-have-me-youve-lost-me-what-am-i

*** begin quote ***

Humility.

A friend posted this on her Facebook page, and it seems too good not to share. Here are some thoughts, then, on humility from the writings of Saint Josemaria Escriva:

The Seventeen Evidences of a Lack of Humility

1. To think that what one says or does is better than what others say or do

*** end quote ***

[JR: Unfortunately, in my self-assessment, I’m “perfect”. 17 for 17. A singular negative accomplishment. I remember learning that even a complete rogue serves as an example of what NOT to do. Wonder why that lesson never took. Nor got into my book. Sigh. I’m sure my fellow Jaspers will score much better. And, since the race is not yet over, maybe I can catch up. As can anyone still running! How does one justify “lack of Humility” with Jasper Pride. Don’t remember that in ingineering class? Maybe one of the many I cut!]

JEMAIL: Walsh, Kevin (MC1980) instructs on the “general calendar”

A little further info on my classmate’s question:

In the pre-Vatican II calendar, the feast day of St. John Baptist de La Salle was May 15, the anniversary of his being proclaimed Patron of Christian Teachers.

When the general calendar was reformed after Vatican II, his feast date was moved to April 7, since most saints are commemorated on the day of their death–the day of their entrance into eternal life. It has the rank of Memorial (which gets downgraded to Optional Memorial in Lent–and eliminated when it falls in Holy Week or the Octave of Easter). Hence, we see this commemoration in our missalettes this year for April 7, with the rank of “Optional Memorial”.

However…in the proper calendar of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, this date remains May 15, and it would be a “Proper Solemnity”. (Just like the ‘Optional Memorial” of St. Patrick on March 17 is a “Proper Solemnity” in the Archdiocese of New York.). My guess is that they opted to keep the traditional date to avoid conflicts with Holy Week and the Octave of Easter.

Kevin Walsh ’80

[JR: Wow, that’s a message full. Didn’t realize it was a PhD level topic. Glad I didn’t take all those beating to learn 15 May for no reason at all. Only to have it change. :-) Guess it couldn’t be too simple, then us fat old white guy injineers wouldn’t have anything left to learn. Thanks.]

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) on rink

RE: Skating rink in VC

Dear Jasper John,

Do you ever take your ideological blinders off and think of the positive possibilities of government projects like the Van Cortlandt Park skating rink right near Manhattan College? Surely there will be talented ice skaters among future students at Manhattan who would not have had the chance to develop their inherent skills if not for the nearby rink. Think of an Olympic champion from Manhattan College and not the loss of a place for another high rise or high priced restaurant or strip joint that free enterprise might have put in its place,

Where I live private enterprise has built an ultra-modern gambling casino while downtown needs more development to put it mildly. Gambling addiction has become a major problem which the government needs to address while the public sector is already scraping for funds to keep the roads paved. Please think about the long term ramifications of your libertarian policies. I do not think you would really like the outcome.

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

[JR: (1) Wow, when I first saw this email, I thought maybe even DMS was going to agree with me. But then, reality set in and it was not to be. (2) The problem with Socialists is they can always find the beneficiaries of their policies, but they can’t, won’t, or don’t see those that are being penalized. Because the cost of this skating rink is divided up by millions of people, we don’t see those penalized by it. I can only say “Broken Glass Fallacy”. 250k$/25M NY taxpayers = a few cents each. But maybe they’d rather spend their money the way they see fit. Rather than have it extracted by force by Bloomberg for a rink that has not made economic sense in the past. (3) “Downtown development” — could it be that high taxes make development “uneconomical”. If, for example, Detroit zeroed out it’s taxes and relied on fees for services, I’d bet you’d see a “gold rush” there. But, Gooferment thinks it knows best. (4) Gambling, like drug addiction, can’t be “addressed” by government. Unless you let them just kill the addicts. (5) And, “paved roads” are a struggle because providing services to people is NOT what Gooferment wants to do; reward friends, punish enemies, and feather nests. Why doesn’t Disney World have trouble paving its roads? (6) I’d like to try some little L libertarian policies. I think it would be great.]

JHQ: “The Arches” Learning and Living Community for MC Class of 2015

http://www.manhattan.edu/news_and_events/featured/02_21_11_1.shtml

Manhattan Launching Learning and Living Community for Class of 2015

Starting in fall 2011, the future class of 2015 will have the opportunity to learn and live in a community through Manhattan College’s new program, The Arches. More than 100 new first-year students will begin their college years living together on the same floor in East Hill, taking two classes with their floor mates and exploring New York City by participating in community service and social and cultural excursions.

“I think that The Arches program will have enormous potential to engage our students and to provide for them a distinctive educational experience authentically grounded in the traditions of Lasallian Catholic higher education,” said Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College.

As the founder of the Lasallian Christian Brothers and the patron saint of teachers, John Baptist de La Salle helped to transform education in France during the 17th century. This transformation was achieved through the development of a sustainable community of teachers manifested in the Christian Brothers community. More than 300 hundred years after the founding of the Christian Brothers, the desire for community among 21st century students remains just as important.

The Arches program at Manhattan evolved as a new way to expand a student’s four-year experience by increasing student interaction, academic and social engagement. The program facilitates student growth by fostering a community where students are encouraged to participate in such activities as team building, attending presentations by guest speakers, collaborating on assignments and other features.

To learn more about the new program, please contact the office of admissions by phone at 1-800-MC2-XCEL or e-mail admit@manhattan.edu.

QUADRANGLE: Website Editor’s Letter

Website Editor’s Letter
Posted: 23rd February 2011

As the website editor for the Quadrangle, I would like to take this time to apologize for the unsteady website “dilemmas” we are constantly facing. At the end of the last semester, I was informed that we would get a new website, so we transferred the semester’s beginning quad articles to http://www.mcquad.webs.com. Unfortunately, we never went beyond the “beta stage” since the communications department in Manhattan College offered us the privilege of having the quad articles placed on the website since they said they had enough room there.

Unfortunately, we will only be able to begin uploading at http://www.manhattan.edu by the end of march , fingers-crossed, so until then, we will be uploading the articles on http://www.mcquad.com. While we may not be able to upload pictures, videos, or audio tracks with the articles for some time, we will finally be able to take our “last journey to get a new website.”

Thank you for your constant patience,
Lesley G John

ENDNOTE: Vatican instructed US bishop to withhold. Unacceptable!

http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=9165

News
Vatican official instructed US bishop to withhold files of troubled priest
February 07, 2011

*** begin quote ***

In 1984, the prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy wrote to an American bishop, instructing him not to hand over personnel files in the case of a priest who had been accused of misconduct.

The letter is being cited as new evidence that the Vatican had a policy of encouraging bishops to withhold evidence of priestly misconduct. In January, the release of a 1997 letter to Irish bishops from the apostolic nuncio in Dublin prompted similar outcries.

The letter, from Cardinal Silvio Oddi to Bishop Manuel Moreno of Tucson, Arizona, has been made public on the BishopAccountability web site. The correspondence involved the case of a Tucson priest whose name has been redacted from the correspondence because, BishopAccountability explains, his misconduct involved consensual activity with a female adult (as well as other misbehavior) rather than abuse of a child.

*** and ***

However, the newly disclosed letter adds to the mounting evidence that many Vatican officials were adamant in their belief that bishops should not allow such disclosure. “The files of a bishop concerning his priests are altogether private; their forced acquisition by civil authority would be an intolerable attack upon the free exercise of religion in the United States,” Cardinal Oddi explains.

*** end quote ***

[JR: This is exactly the type of stuff that puts the Church with one foot in a bucket in its fight to protect the people from the abuses of “The King”. Hard to be “Zorro” when you are literally screwing the parishioners. And, then the cover up. It’s always the cover up. Who knew what and when. If I was a bishop — like that is ever going to happen — I’d hire a “Special Master” to go thru the archives under my control. I’d want to know what was in there that I would NOT want to see in the hands of Wikileaks. And, then I’d release it to the public. No time like the present to get out and in front of the problem. And, I’d have a policy that strips anyone of their buttons before they go in front of my figurative “firing squad”. Trust has to be earned.]
