Decades After His Medal of Honor, a H.S. Diploma
Decorated Veteran Bob Maxwell Walked With Bend HS Class

BEND, Ore. — He’s the most highly decorated veteran in Oregon, but on Saturday,, 90-year-old Bob Maxwell got an honor he’s waited more than 70 years for.

One lesson the Medal of Honor recipient continues to teach every day — modesty. He was awarded the medal of honor after he threw himself on a live grenade in France, saving the rest of his platoon from certain death.

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) corrects my musicology

Dear f. John,

Hope the blood drive went well today!!

A minor point but – “Catholic girls start much too late…” should be attributed to Billy Joel (“Only the Good Die Young”) not Bruce Springsteen. Just to let you know that we are reading all your pearls…

even if some don’t agree with all of them.

Thanks, as always, for your good work.

[JR: (1) 22 pints on Friday. Two better than my niece’s goal. It was a good way to spend the day for me. Helping someone. (2) Argh! You’re absolutely right. I blew that. Should have known. Thanks for the correction. (3) Ahh, “pearls”. Have to stimulate a conversation; otherwise it’d be dull. I just have to take care not induce a stroke in some of the readership. LOL! Us little L libertarian fat old white guy injineers can really stir the pot. (4) Thanks for reading and commenting. Otherwise, it’s a boring monologue. Had those at MC; argh!]

It was Billy Joel, not Bruce Springsteen, who sang that “Catholic girls start much too late.”

[JR: Really? I had no idea … when I wrote it. Fingers got ahead of brain. Great line though. I thought “how true” when I was a “young boy”. Now I’m not so sure. Of anything. But then, I’m not King.]

JEMAIL: O’Connell, Bill (MC1976) picks up the debate

Note to Jasper Stebbins:

You write an interesting piece. Perhaps you can answer some questions:

1) When did we give our national treasure to the greediest people in the country? Or do we count you among those who believe all property belongs to the government until such time as it picks the winner to give it to?

2) In what area exactly does the government (except for the military) perform any service better than the private sector? You may be willing to pay taxes to support any needy child via government programs and that’s fine. What’s stopping you? You can write as big or as many checks to the Treasury as your heart desires, why wait for the taxman to come and take it? You can also take the more efficient route and bypass the government and give your money directly to the numerous charities that help children without losing a significant portion of it in government waste, fraud, abuse. (Take note, conservatives on average give 30% more to charity than liberals)

3) Parents should decide whether or not to have a child before they create one. It seems the only difference between your view and that of Casey Anthony, on trial in Florida for the murder of her two year old, is that she waited too long. You seem to believe you are allowed to kill a child as long as no one wants the child. Only after someone becomes attached to the child does it become murder.

Bill O’Connell, ‘76

[JR: Oh this is exciting, readers. BTW the military isn’t the best example. They are “privatizing” the fighting to get it done. So, even that can’t be done morally, effectively, or efficiently. The Gooferment can’t do ANYTHING right. Keep it small, weak, and on a tight leash. Thanks!]

JEMAIL: Vaccarino, Carmine (MC1957) rants about Cuomo

Andrew Cuomo is a chip off the old block. The old man flaunted his “Catholic Religion” and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, an organization that lobbies against abortion (and same sex marriage). But Mario was a staunch supporter of “woman’s rights”, forget about the child in her womb. I think he should have been expelled from the KofC years ago, and I still feel the same, but who am I to say, only a fourth degree Knight with 53 years of membership.

It was political expediency to join the Knights although we are prohibited from backing any party or candidate; all we can do is express our opinion on issues. But I’m sure Mario used the connection, not at meeting (who knows if he ever showed up for any) but privately. He is a member of Jamaica Council 337 in Queens NY and I have been to many of their meetings over the last 15 years and never saw him there. He probably left when the Italians moved to Long Island and the council is a mixture of minorities.

I rant too long and assume things I don’t know. God forgive me.

Carmine Vaccarino

# – # – #

Vaccarino, Carmine (MC1957)

[JR: (1) I gave up on the KoC when the local Council’s definition of charity and mine were dramatically different. In one long sentence, I thought the Christmas party and presents, which were the result of charitable fundraisers that I had a large hand in, should be for the less fortunate in our community — regardless of religion — rather than the rather well off children of the Knights in the Council. Silly of me, I know and was told so. (2) I’d agree that the KoC could have ostracized Cuomo. But, I think everyone is confused by the lack of leadership. CINO politicians are adept as “using” their connections. Confusing things. (3) “Woman’s rights”, children in the womb, and abortion is a very hard issue. One of the few things that I sure of is that the Gooferment with its diktats and force is NEVER going to solve the issue. It’ll just be used to pit one group against the other for the benefit of the politicians and bureaucrats. (4) Don’t be too hard on yourself. Ranting is one way to get our fellow alums thinking. Soon after that they might take action. Argh! Guess all you can do is agitate inside the KoC to act. CINO’s should be shown the door. imho. No one can force you to accept them. And certainly not to vote for them.]

Methotrexate (rINN) ( /mɛθɵˈtrɛkseɪt/), abbreviated MTX and formerly known as amethopterin, is an antimetabolite and antifolate drug. It is used in treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases, ectopic pregnancy, and for the induction of medical abortions. It acts by inhibiting the metabolism of folic acid. Methotrexate began to replace the more toxic antifolate aminopterin starting in the 1950s.

Gabriel graduated Manhattan in May and now is dealing with the real world. He still has the dream of playing professional basketball, but he also knows there’s life after hoops and he’s set himself up quite well for that.

A political science major at Manhattan with a double minor in philosophy and sociology, Gabriel said he’s interested in criminal law, corporate law and public interest and applied to several local law schools as well as Miami, Florida International and William & Mary.

“That’s what I’m looking to do, but right now I’m just working out and trying to figure out the next step,” Gabriel said.

During the day, Gabriel works for Bronx councilman Oliver Koppell, which he figures gives him some on-the-job law training. And then a few nights a week, he gets back on the court with Queensbridge at Nike Pro City.

JHQ: Two Jaspers on the run

http://www.manhattan.edu/news_and_events/featured/07_05_11_1.shtml

Alumna Fighting for SMA One Step at a Time

Many people run to stay in shape and achieve a personal best time, but Lauren Lundy O’Connor ’02 is running for a cause. Since 2008, O’Connor and her SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) Asics have been hitting the pavement to raise funds to support the research of SMA and to find a cure.

SMA is the No. 1 genetic killer of infants and young children and results in the loss of nerves in the spinal cord and the weakness of the muscles connected with those nerves. When O’Connor’s nephew Owen was diagnosed with SMA in 2008 at just two months and passed away three months later, she was motivated to start running for a cause, and founded Team Run 4 Owen, a website that featured information about SMA, Owen’s story, details on upcoming races, donation opportunities and much more.

In October 2008, O’Connor ran the Dublin marathon and raised $6,000 for SMA, and all of the proceeds were donated to Columbia University’s Spinal Muscular Atrophy Clinical Research Center. Two years later, Michael Van De Loo ’94 connected with O’Connor through her website after he found out his daughter Ciara had SMA.

O’Connor was moved by Van De Loo’s story and that he was a fellow Jasper, and decided to run the New York City Marathon Tune-up 18-mile run last September in honor of Ciara. Two months later, O’Connor prepared for another race for the cause – the New York City marathon and dedicated all of the Brooklyn miles to Ciara. A few days before the marathon, Van De Loo sent a mass e-mail to all of his Manhattan College contacts, and as a result, O’Connor raised an additional $5,000 for SMA research from the Jasper community.

Like Van De Loo, O’Connor has met several families fighting SMA, including the Strong family. Gwendolyn Strong is now three and a half years old and was not expected to live past age two, according to the SMA life expectancy. She is beating the odds, and her parents have formed the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation to document Gwendolyn’s battle and make others aware of SMA, resources available and how people can involved in finding a cure for SMA.

“Gwendolyn’s parents, Bill and Victoria, have become really good friends, and they are dedicated to helping other families that are going through what they are going through,” says O’Connor. “I have raised more than $9,000 for their foundation since May of 2010.”

With the start of the 2011 marathon season, O’Connor and Van De Loo are teaming up to raise even more money for SMA. In late March, Van De Loo and his wife, Kate, ran the New York City half marathon, and O’Connor ran the New Bedford, Mass., half marathon.

In addition, O’Connor will run the Newport, R.I., marathon and the Santa Barbara marathon with Gwendolyn’s father this fall. The fellow Jaspers will also pair up again in November 2011 to run the New York City marathon, which will benefit Team Run 4 Owen for the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation.

“Seeing right now that there are no treatments or cures for this disease, raising money for research is absolutely critical for the children and the families, and the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation also provides information and support for families like myself,” Van De Loo said.

To learn more about SMA, visit http://gwendolynstrongfoundation.org/.

Since this story was written, the College was sad to learn of Ciara’s passing on April 26. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

JOBIT: Lynch, William Francis “Bill” Jr. [MC1944 RIP]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/lohud/obituary.aspx?n=William-Lynch&pid=152428934

Lynch, Jr., William Francis (Bill)

William Francis (Bill) Lynch, Jr., died on July 7, at The Firemen’s Home in Hudson, NY. He was born on August 12, 1922 at Flower Hospital in New York City, son of William Francis Lynch, Sr., and Mary Josephine (Duffy) Lynch, and grew up in the Chelsea section of New York City.

In 1938 he graduated from De la Salle Private Institute as valedictorian of his class. In 1942, at the age of 19, Bill graduated from Manhattan College with his first Bachelor’s degree. In 1944 he earned a BS from Manhattan and attended medical college from 1944-46. In 1951 he graduated from Brooklyn Law School with his BA and his Juris Doctor in 1967. He was a member of the Delta Theta Pi law fraternity.

Bill was owner of Certified Employment Agency from 1949-1954 before joining Nationwide Insurance in 1954. He retired from Nationwide in 1986.

Bill was a communicant at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Ridgefield, CT since 1954 and was a past District Deputy and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 245 in Ridgefield. He received honors of the 4th degree in 1958 and was the state insurance chairman for Connecticut.

In 1954, Bill joined the South Salem Fire Department and at the time of his death was the oldest active member of the department. He was Chief in 1972, 1973 and 1977 and received Firefighter of the Year awards in 1992 and 1997. He was past president of the SSFD in 1969, 1970 and 1980-83. He obtained and wrote the charter for the SSFD Benevolent Association in 1973 and chaired the Finance Committee for many years. He was also active in organizing and running the annual fund drives and served as a fire district election inspector for many years. Known to many as “Mr. SSFD”, Bill was the voice of the annual fireman’s parade for over 30 years.

Bill was actively involved in volunteer fire service organizations including the NYS Fire Service Council, the NYS Fire Safety Consortium, the NYS Fire Marshalls and Inspectors Association, the Westchester County Fire Chiefs Association, the Westchester County Volunteer Fireman’s Association, the Westchester County Parade Judges Association, the Westchester County Fire Advisory Board and the NYS Arson Task Force.

In 1942 during a Glee Club concert at the Waldorf-Astoria, Bill spotted Mary-Emeline Twomey dancing with the Ambassador to Belgium. He cut in on the dance and on November 24, 1949 married the love of his life. The couple settled in Brooklyn and moved to South Salem in 1953.

Bill was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Dr. Mary E. Lynch on July 30, 2006 and by his brother, Reverend Patrick Joseph Lynch of Troy, NY. He is survived by nine children: Mary Clare of Bronx, NY; William (Lauren) of Tajikistan; John of Dover, NY; Michael (Sy) of South Salem, NY: Margaret of Queen Creek, AZ; Adele of San Diego, CA; Laura of Sharon Springs, NY; Diane of Binghamton, NY; and Angela (Joseph) Guerriero of Bethel, CT. Bill leaves 12 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a brother, John Seal of Merritt Island, Fl.

Bill will be remembered as a thoughtful, generous and articulate man, a dedicated firefighter and a devout Catholic. He will be missed for his artful sense of humor and his dedication to his family and his friends.

Family will receive friends on Sunday July 10, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Clark Funeral Home in Katonah, NY. The Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Ridgefield, CT on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 10:15am. JFOUND: Reinke, F. John (MC1968) “helps” a ’11 Marketing seeker

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE FACEBOOK NEWS DESK IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM …

*** begin quote ***

Does any one have Full time Marketing Opportunites? I’m a class of 2011 Manhattan Grad with a Business Administration Degree concentration marketing.

*** end quote ***

@Justin: As a expert in Marketing, why don’t you have a picture? :-) Always have to show the “product”. Right? I’m interested in your question, but, no, I don’t have any “full time marketing opportunities”. But you have one in looking for your next gig. “You!”. I’m trying to be humorous in a very stressful time in your life. Anyone’s life. I have some suggestions:

<1>LinkedIn doesn’t show your full nome or your profile URL so you need to include that.

<2> Have you networked with Prof Predmore at MC? She’s got lots of ideas. How about the “MC jobs lady” Marge Apel?

<3> Have you reached out to your fellow ‘11 alums and offered to help them land. (“First seek to help and then be helped”. And, wolf packs are great in job search. It’s not just for German submarines.

<4> Send me an invite to connect on LinkedIn. I have two Marketing folks, Jaspers, that you have to network with. And I think of networking a la Lucht’s very structure formal sense.

<5> Have you reviewed http://jasperjottings-daily.com/ for networking targets? Again in a very strict sense of “networking”.

<6> Do you have a Unique Value Equation, Unique Sales Equation, and do you have a “success formula”? (If not, I can share what I think it should be.)

<7> I have some jobsearch stuff — most notablly my abstraction of a McKay66 form that I suggest you create a page for EVERY contact you make — I suggest you review at http://goo.gl/kBtz.

So, no, I don’t have any “full time marketing opportunities” to give you, but that’s not imho what you need right this minute.

Good luck, good hunting, and I hope to get to know you better.

MFOUND: Found a basketball player “seeking” via the internet

THE AUTOMATED SEARCHES FOUND THIS.

http://www.dirtytickets.com/manhattan-college-basketball/

*** begin quote ***

I am 18 year old college freshman i would like to play Basketball for a team. I live in Manhattan. 6′1 200lbs.

I am 6′1 200lbs. I want to play for a real team. Willing to work hard.

most division 1 and 2 colleges dont have walk on try outs unless you were scouted by colleges in your area when you were in highschool. you can try out for division 3 schools like any cuny school since you live in manhattan but they usually drop all walk in’s, i dont know what college you attend but call your schools athletics department and ask but the season already started so i think you have to wait till next year.

*** end quote ***

[JR: And being your typically obnoxious fat old white guy injineer, I sent it on to HQ. Interesting that you can’t find the coaches emails listed on the MC website like you can the faculty. Why is that? I’d think that all the staff folks would, should, could be reachable by the public. Hmmm, “easy to do business with” comes to mind. Argh! Why do I bother? Like teaching a pig to <insert favorite activity> … <ends with> and just annoys the pig. In this instance I’m the annoyed pig. Oink, grunt, weeee all the way home. Ahh, now I feel better. ]

SENT TO HQ

*** begin quote ***

To whom it may concern:

Here’s a fellow who seems to want to play. No idea if he’s any good. Obviously clueless to how to get in the front door. But MC is an “interesting place”. What else can you call a Div 1 School with a one handed bball player. Perhaps someone can help this guy?

http://www.dirtytickets.com/manhattan-college-basketball/

I know somewhere Brother Jasper is “stretching”. Maybe you can too? Be nice to have another positive story to put in Jasper Jottings.

[JR: Wonder if the fellow has two legs? That could be a first for MC a one legged small forward? It’s just that I am always amazed at what people can overcome. Maybe we can help this fellow achieve his dreams.]

JNEWS: Furey, Keith William [MC1985 RIP] fundraiser 7/17

Fundraiser Set to Honor the Life of Keith Furey
Friends and community members will host a July 17 benefit in support of the Furey family.
By Abby Lieberman | Email the author | July 8, 2011 Print&nbps;1 Comment

*** begin quote ***

On July 17, Rockland County community members will celebrate the 48 years of Keith Furey’s life, which was cut short on June 30 by his battle with stage four colon cancer.

“Friends of Furey,” a group of hundreds of Furey’s friends, family, and community supporters, will host a fundraiser for the family of the dedicated New City resident on Sunday, July 17th at St. Dominic’s Council, Knights of Columbus Hall located on 150 W. Erie Street in Blauvelt.

The family-oriented event from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. will include food, games, music, face painting, clowns, t-shirts, 50/50 raffles, auctions, and a Mega Raffle with cash prizes totaling $5,000. Admission for adults costs $30 and $10 for children 12 and under.

Proceeds from the event, which was originally planned to help with his medical bills, will go towards benefiting his wife and five children ages 10 to 22. Furey is survived by his wife, Deanna, his children Dominque, James, Michael, Maryanne and Frank, his grandson, Aiden, and his parents, James and Virginia Furey.

Community members and supporters unable to attend the benefit on July 17 are encouraged to make a financial contribution to the raffles, buy a mega raffle ticket for $100 or by donate an item for auction.

Donations can be mailed to: Friends of Furey, PO Box 69, New City, NY 10956-0696

“Keith was a tremendous leader, influenced so many, and donated his own time to the community,” said Robert Carlucci, who coached Furey as a high school swimmer and remained his life-long friend. “We are looking to the community to show their gratefulness to a person who has given so much.”

Furey is described as a loving friend, coach, volunteer and a friend to all.

He gave the word “volunteer” a new meaning with his longtime dedication and devotion to the Rockland community, particularly its youth. Furey joined the Cub Scouts in 1972, went on to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster and remained active in Scouting.

Additionally, he coached Clarkstown’s Swimming and Diving Team and helped make it into one of the State’s top programs. He also worked with the Condor Swim Club of Rockland to place the team in the top 100 in the nation.

A lifelong resident of Rockland, Furey attended Clarkstown High School South and was the captain of the school’s lacrosse team and swim team. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1985 and began his career as a civil engineer. Furey was a member of St. Augustine Parish of New City.

He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2009, overcame it, and was told that the cancer had returned to his liver in 2010. Throughout that time, Furey maintained his commitment to Rockland and to the community.

A Facebook page has been created in Keith Furey’s memory: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=165783603481291

Coach Keith was a role model and a mentor to our son, Ian, who he coached from the time he qualified at 9 until this past spring. When Ian’s coaches could not stay for Zone Quals — Keith did; when Ian almost quit the sport due to an injury and his senior/junior team split — Keith was there for him; when Ian came back after injury and Keith was weak from chemo — he stayed at Ian’s first meet back after injury (while he was swimming mile no less) and saw him finish………We will miss him terribly, but know he had such a positive impact and legacy in his community and on our metro swim community. We will miss you Keith! Fondly — The Bidwell Family

[JR: Sounds like a reason to roll out the VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWS TRUCK and make a field visit. If I can get the keys from Jasper Mike. And, I need a hat. All great reporters have hats with a Press “badge” stuck in the brim — like Matt Drudge or Walter Winchell, just like in the old 40’s movies — I need a hat! Seriously, seems like a Jasper’s family needs some help. If I promise to go, who’s got thirty bucks to meet me there. I’ll be the fellow in the hat!]

Mother sues drug company after teenage daughter ‘collapses and dies while on birth control pill’
By FIONA ROBERTS

Tragic death: Michelle Pfleger, 18, was in her first term at university when she died suddenly from a blood clot

When Joan Cummins said goodbye to her 18-year-old daughter before her first term at university, she consoled herself by thinking she’d be back for Christmas.

But Michelle Pfleger never did come home. Instead, after less than a month at Elon University, North Carolina, she collapsed and died from a massive blood clot – after taking the birth control pill to treat her acne.

Now Mrs Cummins is taking German pharmaceutical firm Bayer to court, claiming the contraceptive pill Yaz contributed to her daughter’s death.

Her case has been bolstered by the Federal Drug Administration, after it announced it was reviewing a range of oral contraceptives, including Yaz, which contain a form of the hormone progestin known as drospirenone.

[JR: To a fat old white guy injineer, when you mess around in complex biological processes, you better understand what you are doing. Bet her mom would trade an live daughter with acne, versus the alternative. Some one always wins the long shot. Maybe the fellow in the white suit in Rome has a point about not messing with nature. At least until we understand what we’re doing. If we would ever.]
