POSITRACTION: ‘They never forgot her’

Friend’s death leads softball team on emotional journey to championship
By John Shaughnessy

*** begin quote ***

Similar to everyone familiar with Katie’s story, Lauck knew that she had been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma—a type of cancer—for three years. But the expectations and the medical percentages were always high that she would eventually recover.

Her doctors believed that she was getting better every day after she received an adult stem-cell transplant at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis on May 12. She was even dancing and laughing in her hospital room on the night before she died of a blood clot.

“She was happy-go-lucky, always smiling on the field and off the field,” Lauck recalls. “She was a very confident player. Softball was going to be her sport in high school.”

*** and ***

In the days that followed, Lauck used the tragedy of Katie’s death to talk about the priorities and foundations of life—family, faith, relationships, trust, forgiveness and support for others. He had stressed those themes throughout the season. This time, the players embraced them.

The team also set a goal: “Win State for Kate!”

“We wanted to show her what she meant to us, the whole softball program and all of Roncalli,” Kristen says.

Nine straight wins later, the team made it to the state championship game.

‘They never forgot her’

*** end quote ***

[JR: Why do we need a tragedy to remind us of priorities? Maybe the Universe sends us these stories to try an teach us in advance of the actual event. Of course, my fellow alums who paid attention in class already know this. These stories take on special meaning for me now. Donna Nobis Pacem ]

JEMAIL: Quinlan, Rev. William M (MC1985) correct my identification

I’m not sure, John, but it looked to me as if you identified me as some priest named Peter Quinn who graduated in 1969–thus my lame joke about looking good for a guy who graduated in 1969. I wasn’t correcting the form of address, but rather the information.

[JR: Sorry! Obviously a screw up over on the “identification” DESK IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM. It’s so hard to get good help these days. Makes me wonder how identity theft happens on the inet. I can’t even reliably id Jaspers. Wasn’t that the problem that Facebook was trying to solve? The emulated the Ivy Facebooks when all incoming freshmen were giving the equivalent of yearbooks so they could id folks and make connections. I need a young Jasper to solve this problem. But then there’s that whole fussy “privacy” problem. So folks don’t want to be be “identified”. Argh! Guess we’re stuck with the mess. BTW Peter Quinn is an author and a very funny guy. Who has a humorous riff where he compares himself to Patterson. Wish we had video of that, it was “wet your pants” funny. At least he’s had real stuff published. I had to self-publish. Any way, I won’t make that mistake again. Regardless of what the “identification desk” tells me. If I’m not careful some one will take over (I can only wish), and I’ll be back on the “obit” desk. At least there, the subjects don’t correct me.]

Anthony L. D’Andrea

RICHMOND, Va. — Anthony L. D’Andrea M.D. passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and three daughters on July 30, 2011, in Richmond, Va.

Dr. D’Andrea practiced medicine in the Portland area for over 40 years, maintaining offices in Portland and South Portland.

Dr. D’Andrea was born in New York City on Nov. 2, 1918. After graduation from Manhattan College, he attended medical school at the University of Rome in Italy. While at the beach at Vasto, Italy, he met Norma Gaburri; soon to become his loving wife of 58 years. He returned to the United States and after completing his internship at Mount Vernon Hospital in New York, he moved his family to Maine where he spent the rest of his career.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) disagrees definitions

Dear Jasper John,

Jasper O’Connell claims that Hitler was a left-winger because the Nazis included “Socialist” in their name. Well the KKK includes “Christian” in their name. “The Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan” is the name of several Klan groups. Enough said, but is frightening that rightists can not admit that Hitler was an extreme example of a right-winger. I admit that Mao and Stalin were extremists of the left- therefore accepting reality. But rightists try to escape the truth and in their minds somehow twist Hitler into a Socialist. What is there about the conservative mind that can not accept reality? My fear is that conservatives can and will accept any atrocities committed by the right as they continue to deny reality. Look at the generally indifferent rightist reaction to the slaughter in Norway conducted by a dedicated Christian rightist.

He also claims that Fannie and Freddie and lending to poor people cause the Bush economic collapse. All the leaders the administration’s policies admit that that is NOT so as I have shown in earlier emails. Former SEC Chairman Cox, former Bush Treasury Secretary Snow, and former Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan have all stated categorically that Fannie and Freddie did NOT cause the meltdown. This seems to be another example of not facing reality – the reality that deregulation and Wall Street gambling led to the catastrophe of 2008.

Jasper O’Connell also claimed that I was somehow depriving a bureaucrat from doing his job when I gave money to a woman and baby after she was turned down by the county. On the contrary when the bureaucrat denied payment he was doing his job as required by the conservatives who years ago ended “welfare as we know it.” Conservatives opposed to abortion should be at the county offices in force to make sure babies get the money they need for food.

BTW I think that both Jasper John and Jasper O’Connell would benefit from reading Malena Watrous’s review of Justin Cartwright’s novel “Other People’s Money” in today’s New York Times Book Review. It might give them a taste of the reality of the great crash of 2008.

[JR: <1> “Socialism” is the characteristic that Gooferment takes over everything. <2> A rose is a rose. The KKK can call themselves anything they want. Doesn’t make them “Christian”. <3> Everyone in the D’s and R’s are into finger pointing. The CRA, Fannie, and Freddie enabled the disaster. The FED, SEC, and FTC “regulators” were corrupt. The politicians and bureaucrats are up to their nose in this mess. <4> So why if the bureaucrats have nothing to do, they never lose their cushy jobs. Like the old joke about the crying bureaucrat because his farmer died. <5> Thanks for the recommendation. I’m tired of retrospective blame shifting.]

NINETY-TEN (90/10) PROGRAM
“Helping Those That Help Themselves”
This Ninety-Ten (90/10) Program is 100% transparent. All transactions will close with the asset manager who has the ability to deliver superior returns such that 10% cash investment will achieve the additional 90% needed to meet 100% of the funding necessary to complete a project or fund a company’s growth or expansion. Qualified requests should meet the following criteria: • Asset-worthy, financially and economically viable properties• Existing companies in need of capital • Start-up companies
The asset manager wants to conduct business with developers, business owners and others that have interesting projects or business opportunities that are both viable and deserve consideration.
The asset manager will consider projects submitted for a cash minimum of $4 million (to fund a $40 million program) and a maximum as yet to be determined. The term of the vehicle will be 5-10 years, with potential extensions as necessary and agreed upon by both parties. The asset manager will charge 6-8% interest, depending on the developer’s capabilities, and the project’s type, location and size, and whether the asset manager takes any equity in the business or project. The loan will be non-recourse with the asset manager taking a first lien position on real estate development projects and or equity positions in projects and business ventures. This program will also have an initial cost of 5-6 points total, one-time fee which will include: origination, due diligence, administration and other processing costs.
Projects and other opportunities will only be considered after the client submits a program request with a Proof of Funds (POF).

Morgan Stanley’s Wood Using Wall Street Drive as Golf Coach at Manhattan
By Erik Matuszewski – Aug 11, 2011 12:00 AM ET

*** begin quote ***

Jerry Wood is relying on skills that helped him recruit and develop top talent at Morgan Stanley (MS) in his latest endeavor: coaching the men’s golf team at Manhattan College.

Wood, 57, has spent 30 years at Morgan Stanley, where he’s a senior adviser after holding managerial roles including global head of sales for fixed income and equities.

While the duties of part-time college golf coach may not seem to dovetail with that of an executive at the world’s top merger adviser, Wood says he sees similarities.

“You recruit kids from schools, you try to get the best talent, you give them the tools to learn the business, then basically mentor them, and hopefully they come through in a big way,” Wood, of Huntington, New York, said in a telephone interview. “A lot of the kids I hired as MBA’s and analysts are now managing directors running the business. It’s very rewarding seeing somebody who you kind of picked.”

Wood never has coached golf before but brings a competitive background to his new job.

He was captain of the golf team in 1975 as a senior at Manhattan, which plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and has memberships at Huntington Country Club and Garden City Golf Club on New York’s Long Island. He finished ninth at last year’s Long Island Senior Open at Fresh Meadow Country Club against professionals and amateurs. He has a 2.3 handicap index and said he’s played all but six or seven of Long Island’s 140 golf courses.

Dear John,

Today’s NY Daily News (8/12/11) has a piece “Green Gardens” by Jason Sheftell, about a Senior Housing Building that is built on the Campus of Mount Saint Ursula Academy in the Bronx, (My Mother’s Alma Mater!). The article mentions the contribution being made by Catlin Grath, A Manhattan College Graduate. (I do not have a Class year for Catlin, but I am searching).

I have a copy.

ENDNOTE: Keeping kids away from bombs

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/catholics-keeping-kids-away-from-bombs-in-laos

Catholics keeping kids away from bombs in Laos
By Laura Sheahen
Laura Sheahen is Regional Information Officer for Catholic Relief Services in Asia. She is based in Cambodia.

*** begin quote ***

But in Laos, a country that borders Vietnam, you never know what you’ll hear about deadly explosives.

I’m sitting with Bounma, a teenager whose right leg is pocked with shrapnel scars.

When he was seven, he and a friend were in the woods, hunting for birds. His friend knew “bombies” the size and shape of tennis balls were probably lying around. He knew they were fun.

Bounma and his friend found a yellow one that they tossed one back and forth a few times. Nothing happened. Then his friend decided to throw the bombie at a piece of metal, and it exploded.

His friend didn’t make it.

*** and ***

Over the past year, I’ve spent hours interviewing kids in danger zones, asking leading questions like “What would you do if you saw a bombie?”

But as they dangle before me, there’s something about their funny, knobbly shape that’s so interesting. So mesmerizing. Before I see the Do Not Touch sign, I reach out a hand.

*** end quote ***

[JR: “We”, as the folks who fund the Gooferment, are RESPONSIBLE for this silent disaster. So, what can “We” do to fix it. “We” broke it! “We” own it. Colin Powell got that right. When I was on Wall Street, a very smart boss once told me “When you’re in a hole, stop digging.” So maybe we should stop all the “wars” that the Gooferment loves so much. Then start cleaning up the messes. Argh! ]
