POSITRACTION: Citizen steps up big time

Police: NM kidnapper thwarted by alert neighbor
By JERI CLAUSING – Associated Press

*** begin quote ***

Diaz’s husband, Antonio Diaz Chacon, gave chase in his car.

Garcia tried to lose him but ended up crashing into a telephone pole a few miles away, police said.

Garcia fled on foot, and Diaz Chacon grabbed the girl and took her home, police said. Garcia then returned to his wrecked van and took off but was later captured by police, authorities said.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Excellent! I’m not sure I that I’d have been so courageous. You have to admire when someone reacts and it comes to a happy ending. Too bad we don’t have an armed citizenry that protect the civilian population. Oh yeah we do. But the police can’t be everywhere. But the citizen is “the police” in disguise. We saw what happens when society breaks down in London. I’m not sure I could do what this guy did. Barehanded. My fellow alums probably would not hesitate. I need my challengers much smaller or my tools much bigger. Figure with one of my 1911’s, I could probably handle it. Or at least make a lot more noise in the perp’s general direction. Argh! Bravo Zulu to this guy. He shoulda been a Jasper.]

Hey John:

Interesting stuff he’s up to–and it’s inspiring in that he got to that place by working his way up. His generous and uncomplaining description of taking a job as a guard at the Met (no Jasper degree necessary for that) gives insight to his character and dedication. I thought you’d like to see him in action at a Spectrum event he curated on May 26, 2011. Links are below.

A Spectrum of Inspirations

When Christopher Gorman ’05 graduated from Manhattan, he didn’t plan on working at a museum. His goal was to work in writing or journalism. The former features editor of the Quadrangle, who also wrote poetry and fiction, landed a job at Harper Collins Publishing, as the assistant to the art director, but he didn’t think he wanted to stay in publishing.

JHQ: Andrew Ryan, VP Facilities

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/082511_1.shtml

August 25, 2011

ANDREW RYAN APPOINTED VICE PRESIDENT FOR FACILITIES AT MANHATTAN COLLEGE

RIVERDALE, N.Y. –– Andrew Ryan, P.E., a resident of Nanuet, N.Y., has been appointed vice president for facilities at Manhattan College. He comes to Manhattan College from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. An alumnus of the College, Ryan will have responsibility both for the daily operation of Manhattan’s physical plant and for project development, design and management of new projects. His first major project will be overseeing the construction of the College’s Student Commons, a centerpiece in Manhattan’s new strategic plan.

A professional engineer with extensive operations experience, Ryan has worked on projects with Perkins Eastman, Syska Hennessy and Langan Engineering. At Weill Cornell Medical College, he had overall responsibility for the maintenance and operation of more than 1.6 million square feet of combined state-of-the-art research, medical, educational, business and residential space. His work included extensive collaboration on construction projects, and in strategic planning and implementation.

“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Ryan back to his alma mater,” said Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College. “Andy’s excellent engineering education combined with broad and deep experience and an impressive record of accomplishment will make him a great addition to our administrative team.”

Ryan’s duties will include providing leadership for the College’s extensive sustainability initiatives. Energy conservation has always been one of his main goals, and during his time at Weill Cornell Medical College, Ryan brought the institution into the Mayor’s University Challenge to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by 30 percent by 2018. Cornell has already reached that goal and has programs in place to reduce emissions further by 2018.

Throughout much of his career, Ryan has worked at medical and higher education institutions. He spent the first decade at the New York Power Authority in White Plains, where he began as an assistant operations engineer in Plattsburgh. While there, he was the lead engineer for a major expansion of a substation. Ryan held several positions at the New York Power Authority, finishing his time there as senior electrical engineer. In the early 1990s, he became the director of plant operations at Hackensack University Medical Center, and he also served at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, N.J., before joining Weill Cornell Medical College in 1998.

Ryan graduated from Manhattan College with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and also holds an M.B.A. from Iona College. He is a member of a number of professional organizations, such as the APPA, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, the Hospital Engineers of Greater New York, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is a licensed engineer in both New York and New Jersey.

“I am thrilled to be returning to Manhattan College and to be a part of the development of the College’s Student Commons,” said Ryan. “At the same time, we will be looking at opportunities for energy conservation throughout the campus.”

UPDATE FROM MC MONTHLY

Second Annual Newman Lecture at Manhattan

Molly Easo Smith, Ph.D., executive director of the Initiative to Develop Women as Academic Leaders, which is sponsored by the International Association of University Presidents, will present the second annual Newman Lecture at the College on Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. in Hayden 100. She will speak on The Liberal Arts: Engaging the Global Community and focus on developing interest in liberal arts centered education globally.

Smith was born in Chennai, India, and earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in English from Madras Christian College, University of Madras and her doctorate from Auburn University. She has published widely on Shakespeare and Renaissance drama and held faculty and administrative positions at Ithaca College, St. Louis University, University of Aberdeen, Seton Hall University and Wheaton College, and served as the 11th President of Manhattanville College.

Manhattan College launched the annual Newman Lecture last year to celebrate Cardinal John Henry Newman’s beatification, which occurred on Sept. 19, 2010, in Birmingham, England, at a ceremony presided by Pope Benedict XVI. The goal of the lecture series is to reaffirm the significance of the liberal arts as the core of undergraduate education. The series is named after Cardinal Newman, whose The Idea of a University stressed the central place of the liberal arts in the Catholic intellectual tradition, as well as education in the professions.

Hornell, N.Y. —

Lorry Castiglione, donning the white and green of Manhattan College, once threw the first-ever touchdown pass seen on live television, according to local legend.

“He always liked to tell that story,” John Tobin, a long-time friend of Castiglione, said. “I’m not sure who they played, but they played the game at Yankee Stadium. He threw the first touchdown ever to be seen live on T.V. — that’s the way Lorry told it anyway and it’s probably true. He was proud of that fact.”

AP Interview: NYPD boss expands counterterror role

NEW YORK — Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly sits at the head of a conference table in a top-floor office that looks like a cross between a Fortune 500 boardroom and a Best Buy sales floor. He’s calling up security-camera feeds that appear on wall-to-wall flat screens.

If he wants, he can produce a military-style aerial map of lower Manhattan, including Wall Street and ground zero. But on this weekday, he zooms in on a homeless man passed out in a bus stop on the Upper West Side, then emails a photo to the neighborhood’s precinct house — prodding commanders there to get the man shelter.

The scene put two of the 69-year-old commissioner’s trademarks on display: an obsessive attention to detail and an insatiable appetite for the latest technology. He’s also known for an impervious attitude toward questions about the New York Police Department’s counterterrorism tactics, which have raised concerns about civil rights and unchecked power.
