Camera captures bystanders rescuing man trapped under burning car

Looking at the charred wreckage afterward, police say the group may have saved Wright’s life.

“I’m impressed that that many people would get involved, especially where there’s fire involved, the possibility of explosions and everything else,” Curtis said.

Still, Suyundikov says he and the several others did only what they had to. “I’m no hero,” he said.

As emergency responders move in to help, Wright finally started to show signs of life. It’s something that may not have been possible if the group of onlookers didn’t step in and help.

“They’re rescuers. They did a great job of getting him the help that he needed,” Curtis said.

“I just was in the right moment to help him,” Suyundikov said.

[JR: More than a Good Samaritan moment. It’s a true “Greater love hath no man”. While it is easier with a group, someone must have thought about an explosion. Hollywood is always showing cars blowing up. And, professional help was on the way. But still, I’m not sure that I’d be that brave. Like to hope so. I know my fellow Jaspers would do the right thing without hesitation.]

JFOUND: Schilling, Charles Thomas [MC????] remembered

http://blogs.thehour.com/whosonfirst/?p=634

Maris-Mantle Home Run Race: Sept. 24, 1961

*** begin quote ***

Did You Know … Chuck Schilling, the starting second baseman on the 1961 Red Sox, and Curt Schilling, who helped pitch the Red Sox to the 2004 and 2007 World Series championships, had the same last name, spelled it exactly the same, but were not related. Charles Thomas Schilling, who was born in Brooklyn and attended Manhattan College, was signed by Boston as an amateur free agent in 1958. He made his major league debut on opening day 1961 and played all five years of his big league career with the Red Sox, the first three as the team’s starting 2B and the last two as a backup. In fact, in ’61 Schilling led the league in plate appearances with 738, and also posted career highs that season in games (158), at-bats (646), hits (167), runs scored (87), RBIs (62), and batting average (.259). He was traded to the Minnesota Twins right before the 1966 season, and while he made the 28-man roster, he never appeared in any games. Schilling retired from baseball before rosters had to be cut to 25 players on May 15, finishing with a .239 career average, 470 hits, 23 home runs and 146 RBIs in 541 games during his five seasons. He returned to Long Island, where he became a secondary-school mathematics teacher and played competitive softball until the age of 69. He is now 73.

JNEWS: Veliz, Tierney [MC2011] gets community support

Thousands show support for Fredon family
By JESSICA MASULLI

*** begin quote ***

FREDON — Rosemarie Veliz used to feel invisible.

She felt as though having a son with a terminal illness kept her family isolated, but on Saturday afternoon thousands of people came to Lodestar Park to support the Veliz family.

“Now, I feel like this community has opened up,” Veliz said. “It’s overwhelming. I’m proud of my community and the extended community. They are so kind.”

The family has faced challenge after challenge. First, their 20-year-old son Chase Veliz suffers from Hunter Syndrome, which has left him bedridden for the last four years and requires 24-hour medical care. Second, their 22-year-old daughter, Tierney Veliz, suffered a broken spine in 16 places, a broken neck, pelvis, collarbone and hip, and a crushed cervical spine nerve 6 (C6) in a car accident in June.

Tierney Veliz had just graduated from Manhattan College and was set to enter a fall doctorate program in psychology at Seton Hall University when the accident occurred. Her vehicle became airborne, flipped and rolled twice near Marksboro Deli in Frelinghuysen.

The accident left her paralyzed from the chest down, but she continued to defy odds and can now lift her left arm and use her right arm. She no longer relies on a feeding tube, and the tracheostomy was removed, but her main goal remains to walk again so that she can eventually continue pursuing higher education.

Paul Corballis obituary
Laura Corballis
The Guardian, Saturday 24 September 2011

*** begin quote ***

Paul Corballis was the model for the Jolly Butcher pub sign, in Staines, Middlesex.

My father, Paul Corballis, who has died aged 77, was an American anglophile who ran a travel agency in the US specialising in the “Great British pub crawl”. He was in his element as a tour leader – he explored London with an eye for the odd and the obscure, working up an offbeat tour of the city for visiting friends long before making it his work. He was at one with Samuel Johnson’s sentiment that a man tired of London must be tired of life.

Paul certainly never tired of the British pub and kept a record of every one he ever had a pint in. His lifetime total was nearly 3,000 – a daunting achievement, given that return visits didn’t count. As each 1,000 mark approached, he touted the opportunity for a party and publicity around all the breweries, and chose the one that sounded most fun. In 1988, he published Pub Signs, a record of his photographic skills. He had become friends with the sign painter George Mackenney, and modelled as the Jolly Butcher for the eponymous pub in Staines.

I thought I sent this to Phil a little while ago, but wanted to bring it to your attention.

A 2011 graduate, Tierney Veliz, was in a near-fatal car accident back on June 5, just weeks after commencement. As a consequence of the accident, Tierney suffered a variety of injuries leaving her in a quadriplegic state. There was a fundraising event over the weekend to offset mounting medical costs incurred by the family who also have a terminally ill son. I’m attaching a letter from her family that mentions the event and describes in further detail this overwhelmingly tragic story.

Please keep Tierney, her brother, their parents and all of their family and friends in your prayers during this particularly trying time.

Thanks,
Tom

“Coming Home”

On June 5th our daughter Tierney Veliz was involved in a near fatal car accident resulting in severe injuries. These injuries include a severely compromised respiratory system, numerous fractures throughout her entire body leaving her in a quadriplegic state. Subsequently, she endured surgeries to repair and stabilize her devastating neck and spinal injuries which included sixteen fractures. She remained in the Morristown Memorial ICU Trauma Department for five weeks and is now currently at Kessler Rehabilitation Center in West Orange.

Tierney recently graduated with honors from Manhattan College. She graduated in the top five percent of her class with inductions into three National Honors Societies. Tierney anticipated attending Seton Hall University this fall and has been accepted into their PHD program for psychology. Her future intentions are to become a clinical psychologist and open her own practice. Although she is a very gifted, talented, caring, and compassionate young lady, this life altering event has placed these future endeavors in jeopardy.

One of the things that make Tierney so special is her desire to help others and her consistent efforts to show compassion towards those in need. Tierney is the eldest of four children with three siblings whom love her very much; Christian, Marina and Chase. Chase, our eldest son has a disease called Mucopolysaccharidoses; Hunter Syndrome. He has had an entire life of suffering after enduring many complicated surgeries and many hospitalizations. He is currently homebound, bedridden and requires 24 hour medical assistance, which is primarily provided by us, his parents, with the support of a part-time registered nurse. Christian will be a sophomore at Pope John XXIII Regional High School and Marina will attend St. Joseph Regional School as a 7th grader. They too are honors students and continue to exemplify a life as young, caring individuals.

Along with the mounting medical costs acquired by our terminally ill son, we are now acutely aware of the overwhelming and similar expenses needed for our daughter Tierney. In order to reunite her with us, we are required to provide very specific living accommodations. Currently our home does not provide a barrier free environment; therefore much needed construction to our home is necessary to allow her to live safely and comfortably. As we approach the task at hand, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Currently, Tierney’s rehabilitation is progressing. She is making marked progress with her respiratory system. She is now able to breathe on her own without the aid of a ventilator. In the near future we are hopeful that she will have her tracheotomy reversed. Additionally, she is now eating solid foods and is moving toward the goal of the removal of her feeding tube. Her paralysis is still extremely devastating. With the use of only one arm she continues to undergo daily physical and occupational therapy. This therapy is exhausting both mentally and physically. Throughout all of this, Tierney maintains a positive attitude.

We are confident that Tierney will continue to improve with the multitude of prayers and support from the community. We ask that you keep our family in your thoughts and prayers, as the reality and pain of this accident continues to impact our lives each and every day.

Our local community members are planning a “Coming Home Fundraising Event” on September 24, 2011 in preparation for her projected release from Kessler Rehabilitation Center in October. Any support you can provide to help raise funds in order to bring Tierney home would be humbly appreciated.

The Veliz Family
Edmundo, Rosemarie, Tierney, Chase, Christian and Marina

Upon retiring in 2001, Tom was active in the Old Guard of Livingston, serving as chaplain and would often collect bread from local merchants to bring to the soup kitchens of Newark.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy (Hertig) and Joseph, and two brothers, Richard and Mark. Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Ellen (Walsh); a daughter, Pegeen Williams (Robert); a son, Thomas (Tracy); three grandchildren, Brynn and Thomas Comerford and Ellie Williams, all of Livingston; he is also survived by his sister, Judith Barbarito (Edward) of Pequannock.

I will give a talk on Transhumanism and Religion at Manhattan College, Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 4pm in the Rodriguez Room (Miguel 311). The talk has been organized by Robert Geraci.

*** and ***

My own short and hopefully simple definition of transhumanism: The basic tenet of classical Humanist thinking is that concrete thinking and feeling persons are more important than abstract, “artificial” ethical constructs. Extrapolating from current scientific and technological trends, we can see that our species may soon develop the capability to control its own evolution, including modifying itself in fundamental ways. Such modifications may range from life extension and cognitive enhancement (mid term), to becoming non-mortal radically enhanced software entities (long term). Transhumanists will welcome such changes as long as they result in a better life for all persons directly concerned, where “person” is defined as “thinking and feeling entity”.

*** and ***

In religion, I am an atheist in the sense that I don’t believe in the existence of any god (yet), but I tend to sympathize with the “spiritual” approach to reality and values of many believers. In other words, I can live with most combinations of moderate [socialism, libertarianism, atheism, spirituality]. At the same time, I find fundamentalism, bigotry and intolerance VERY annoying, regardless of where they come from.

Luis Zayas Appointed School of Social Work Dean at The University of Texas at Austin

Sept. 27, 2011

AUSTIN, Texas — Luis H. Zayas, a professor at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., has been appointed dean of the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Luis Zayas, appointed dean of the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin, says social workers must be prepared for transdisciplinary work.

Zayas’ appointment, which is effective Jan. 1, 2012, fills a vacancy created when Dean Barbara White announced her decision to step down after having served as dean since 1993.

“Dr. Zayas has had a long and distinguished scholarly, teaching and administrative career in social work. His appointment will bring great leadership and recognition to our School of Social Work and to the university,” said University Provost Steven Leslie. “We are delighted that he has accepted our offer to become dean.”

“One of the great honors of this position is to continue to build on the enormous legacy that Dean Barbara White has so firmly established. Joining one of the great faculties of social work as dean is the highlight of my career,” said Zayas, who is the Shanti K. Khinduka Distinguished Professor of Social Work at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work and professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine at Washington University.

Zayas has held administrative positions at Washington University, including associate dean for faculty and director of the Center for Latino Family Research. He has been an active member of the Washington University community, serving on the Chancellor’s Coordinating Council on Diversity Initiatives and the Provost’s Work Group on Diversity.

He said transferring evidence-based knowledge and skills derived from research to students is important in today’s world.

“Once we talked of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work,” Zayas said. “Now we know that social workers must be prepared for transdisciplinary work. With this in mind, I look forward to the challenges and rewards of collaborating with our faculty and students, and other divisions of the university, to develop and integrate our knowledge to address the complex problems of our nation and our world.”

Zayas has also been a visiting associate professor of family medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a professor in the Graduate School of Social Service at Fordham University, both in New York.

Zayas received his Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Columbia University, where he also earned his master of philosophy and master of arts degrees in developmental psychology, as well as a master of science degree in social work. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Manhattan College in New York City.

He is chair of the research committee for the National Alliance for Hispanic Families in Washington, D.C. and volunteers with local immigrant groups in the St. Louis area.

Board of Ed Names New Facilities Director to Replace Otto
Michael Lynch served as the facilities director for White Plains Public Schools for 18 years.
By David Hutter

*** begin quote ***

The Board of Education approved the appointment of Michael Lynch Tuesday night as the district’s new director of facilities and operations, six weeks after his predecessor resigned on charges that he stole from a former employeer.

Lynch will begin working for the district on Oct. 3.

Lynch brings over 20 years of experience in school district building maintenance. He worked in the same capacity for White Plains Public Schools from 1992 to 2010, directing more than $200 million in capital construction and renovation projects.

During that time, Lynch established security systems, helped wire the district’s computer network, upgraded heating/ventilation/air conditioning units, and performed asbestos abatement, according to Superintendent Stephen Falcone.

“Mr. Lynch was responsible for all building operations, oversight of the custodial and maintenance staff, field and turf maintenance, and coordination of construction projects,” Falcone told the board. “Mr. Lynch was responsible for 1.3 million square feet of occupied school space and 166 acres of property in White Plains.”

Falcone said that Lynch instituted energy savings projects in White Plains and worked in a similar capacity for the Nyack, N.Y. Public School District from 1988 to 1992, Falcone said.

A graduate of Manhattan College with a degree in health education, Lynch is also a firefighter in South Salem, N.Y., where he previously served as fire chief. He has served as a member of the Katonah-Lewisboro, N.Y. Facilities Planning Committee, co-chairman of the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee, and a Town Council representative.

Hans Otto, Lynch’s predecessor, was placed on leave in June and resigned in August after being charged with stealing nearly $7,000 in equipment from New Canaan Public Schools, where he worked from 1999 to 2011.

Otto and began serving in Darien in April. He succeeded Paul Engemann, who died suddenly in November.

[JR: Blood means a lot to the folk who are on the receiving end. And, their families. It’s truly the gift of life. I know up close and personal how it’s essential in any fight for life. Even if it’s just to buy the medicine men time. I’m on a monthly schedule for a specific recipient, who I don’t know. By an individual getting platelets from the same sources, they avoid platelet rejection. I can’t mess that up or I’d be there on 10/4. But you can be there for them that need it. Think of it as a modern day “blood brother”. Maybe at the Pearly Gates, if there is such a thing, there’ll be an express line, like at the grocery store, with a very lenient judge / cashier who say: “Well , you bled enough that we can overlook all these other imperfections.” At least I’m hoping.]

Medical Breakthrough, New Discoveries, Science & Technology News

*** begin quote ***

Women who use contraceptives like birth control pills experience memory changes, according to new UC Irvine research. Their ability to remember the gist of an emotional event improves, while women not using the contraceptives better retain details.

*** and ***

Nielsen and fellow researcher Nicole Ertman agreed the findings could help lead to fuller answers about why women experience post traumatic stress syndrome more frequently than men, and how men remember differently than women. Men typically rely more on right-hemisphere brain activity to encode memory. They retain the gist of things better than details. Women on the pill, who have lower levels of hormones associated with female reproduction, may remember emotional events similarly to men. Nielsen plans to do her doctoral thesis on whether hormones affect the retention of details.

[JR: Yup, “we” are definitely experimenting on “ourselves” without any real understanding. When do we stop? When “we” screw something we can’t undo!
