POSITRACTION: Everyone needs a little superhero now and then

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/chicagotribune/obituary.aspx?n=erik-martin-electron-boy&pid=153886795

Erik “Electron Boy” Martin

SEATTLE (AP) — In real life he was Erik Martin, a boy with a constellation of severe health problems and a rare form of cancer. But in his imagination he was Electron Boy, a superhero who saved Seattle from the forces of darkness and evil one spring day last year.

Erik died Friday at home. He was 14.

In April 2010, hundreds of volunteers in Seattle and Bellevue made Erik’s superhero story come true, in an elaborately choreographed event created by the Washington chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Wearing a handmade superhero costume that he had helped design, and riding in a DeLorean sports car, Erik rescued the Seattle Sounders from Dr. Dark and Blackout Boy. He saved a Puget Sound Energy worker stuck in a bucket truck, rescued a group of people trapped on the observation deck of the Space Needle, and captured the villains, played to the hilt by Edgar Hansen and his sidekick Jake Anderson, both of Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch.”

*** and ***

Three years ago, Erik was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called paraganglioma, which spread throughout his body and was not treatable with surgery or chemotherapy.

When the Make-A-Wish Foundation offered to grant him his wish, Erik told wish manager Jessie Elenbaas that he wanted to do things he has never been able to do: to run fast, be powerful and help people.

“Everyone wants to see someone become a superhero for a day, especially someone struggling with as many issues as Erik was,” she said.

*** end quote ***

[JR: “Everyone wants …”. Yup, you and I can be someone’s “superhereo” enabler. Just had lunch yday with Flynn, Bro. Gregory (MC1967) and he’s a superhero. He helps a couple of hundred children every year. I was playing an “enabler” trying to link him with resources at MC that can be a win win for everyone. The MC faculty and students can apply their “learnin” to the real world and those children in a rough life get the benefit. (And, yes, for those who find it hard to believe, I actually came out of my hole and it wasn’t groundhog’s day.) I’m sure my fellow alums don’t need my urging to do great things, but maybe this story will touch them as it did me. Everyone has a role; even if it’s just to play the villain.]

From: Menchise, Louis (MC1987)
Date: Sun, Oct 9, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Subject: Louis Menchise 1987 needs repsonses to sway investors

Movie viewers: Would you be interested in seeing better movies? Would you like to tell filmmakers, producers, and the studios what you want to see when you go to the movies or watch one at home?

Would you like me to try and convince movie theater companies they should give you discounts for telling me what you want to see? Let me know that as well.

Are you a filmmaker? Would you be interested in knowing what the viewing public wants to see when they go to the movies? My website would provide this information won’t come to fruition unless you respond with a “Yes.” I need to prove to investors of the viability of this idea. Don’t expect that other film person to tell my yay or nay for you – how else is anyone going to know how many film people would want this information? Such a website would be a great benefit to all of us, and the viewing public – a group to which we belong as well.

My last question: How much would you be willing to pay for information? I would charge on a yearly basis or by individual project.

Mine is the only website that provides specific information before the conceptual, writing, and production processes.

You can reply here, or you can do so through my website, BetterFlicks.com. Spread the word!!

http://www.BetterFlicks.com

Thank you.

JOBIT: Swartz, Warren [MC???? RIP]

http://obituaries.pressherald.com/obituaries/mainetoday-pressherald/obituary.aspx?n=warren-swartz&pid=154056095

Warren Swartz, 77

SANFORD — Local resident and civic leader, Warren Swartz, went to rest on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at the age of 77.

Born on June 16, 1934, to Harold and Margaret Swartz in Brooklyn, N.Y., he distinguished himself in sports and music. While at Manhattan College, Warren met and later married Merle Joan White, his wife of 56 years.

In 1954, Warren joined the defense industry as a machinist for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and began working with the emerging jet engine technology manufacturing division in Connecticut. During that time Warren was very active in the community as a Little League baseball coach and on the building committee for the local Notre Dame Church. In 1979 he was selected to head up the team responsible for building, staffing and operating a new manufacturing plant in North Berwick, which successfully opened in 1980 and is still in operation today.

While in Sanford, Warren served as president of the Town Club, was a member of the Sanford Kiwanis Club, and a Sergeant in the local Salvation Army. He volunteered to tutor children at Sanford High School and Sanford Junior High School, served on the finance committee of the H.D. Goodall Hospital, was chairman of the town Warrant Committee, and a leader in the Right to Life movement.

Retirement did not slow him down as he served on the Federal Grand Jury in Portland and worked as a field worker for the National Census Bureau. His life-long interest in cars led him to seek part- time employment at Auto Zone in Sanford, where he worked until his passing. He worked on the committee to build the new Goodall Park in town and was a long-time supporter of the Sanford Mainers summer baseball team serving as a host family for many players. Warren touched many lives and hearts and will be missed by all.

A man of many opinions, Warren shared them in columns he wrote for both the Portland Press Herald and the Journal Tribune for several years.

Survivors include his wife Joan Swartz of Sanford; son Kevin Swartz of California, daughter Cynthia Swartz and her husband Steve Holmes of Wallingford, Conn., son Stephen Swartz and his wife Leslie of Denton, Texas, son Lawrence Swartz and his wife Annie of Plympton, Mass.; sister Peggy Richards of Rhode Island; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

At the request of the family no public memorial service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. Condolences may be expressed at http://www.blackfuneralhomes.com.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider: The Salvation Army P. O. Box 391 Sanford, Maine 04073

Nelson Cruz

Any alumni getting married check out my site http://www.nelsoncruzevents.com

we have the best entertainment in NYC. While I was at Manhattan college I was an MC and DJ on weekends. Little did I know that I would have an entertainment business and nothing to do with biomechanics. I still love my time at Manhattan college.

# – # – #

We create wonderful memories. That’s it. It’s that simple.

How do we do it? First, we listen. Just tell us how you envision your event. Share all the details. If you need ideas, we’re happy to help. We’ve been in business a long time and have lots of experience and resources for creating fun, fabulous, spectacular mitzvahs, weddings, corporate events, sweet sixteens and more.

Second, we work hard to ensure that every detail is attended to with the care and attention you deserve. Our goal is to make sure that you don’t have to worry. Not before, not during, not after. You get to fully enjoy the festivities without a care in the world.

We’re creative and passionate about what we do. That’s how events – that create wonderful memories – come to life.

JNEWS: Clancy, Sr. Helen [MC1968] honored for her work

http://tmlaalumnae.blogspot.com/2011/10/s-helen-clancey-honored.html

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2011

S. Helen Clancey Honored

Sister Helen Clancy is remembered by TMLA Alumnae from the 1970s as the Chairperson of the English Department. She was recently honored by the Sisters of St. Joseph for her many ministries as detailed here.

Sister Helen Clancey entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Centenary Year of 1956. After graduating from Brentwood College, her first ministry was teaching at the junior high school level. During this time, she earned an MA in English from Manhattan College. Then at The Mary Louis Academy she served as English teacher, Department Chairperson and Dean. In 1977 she was assigned as Assistant Principal at Our Lady of Perpetual Help HS in Brooklyn.During this period, she also Chaired the committee that rewrote the Constitutions of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Following this, she became an adjunct professor at St. John’s University and, through Mercy College, taught at the New York State men’s correctional facilities. She also performed financial work at a Queens parish.

From 1986-1994, Sister Helen was elected to the Congregation’s Leadership team as a Councilor. During her second term, she was asked to become the Administrator of Maria Regina Convent which was home to ill and retired Sisters. Helen assumed this new responsibility with characteristic enthusiasm and energy. Using her administrative background, she immersed herself in mastering health care, earned her license and began the process of having Maria Regina become a licensed health care facility. During the years of disruption while the facility was renovated to meet with State Department requirements, Helen and her staff continued to provide quality care for the health needs of the Sisters.

By October 2001, the Maria Regina Residence was dedicated as a State Licensed Health Care Facility. Due to Helen’s dedication and leadership, Maria Regina is now a 5 Star facility for recuperants and long term residents. It clearly reflects the unique Certificate of Need issued by the State Department of Health which states that…”Maria Regina is primarily for Sisters of St. Joseph, Sisters and Brothers of other religious congregations, Priests and Lay Persons as there is room.” After 20 years as Administrator, Sister Helen resigned in June 2011 because of health concerns. She will be honored for her work in October 2011 by a grateful Congregation.

Dear John,

I believe that Sister Helen is a member of the Class of 1968.

May She Rest In Peace.

Mike

[JR: Thanks, Mike. Much appreciated.]

Clancy, Sr. Helen [MC1968]

[JR: A fine year for Jaspers. Another round of grog all around to celebrate Sister and all the great Jaspers. And, even those not so great from Class of 68, like me.]

BLAUVELT — Back in December, Mary Dintrone was diagnosed with metaplastic breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease that affects less than one percent of breast cancer patients.

Dintrone, 76, of Valley Cottage, underwent a mastectomy, endured seven months of chemotherapy and is currently cancer-free. Now she hopes to draw attention to the devastating disease.

“There’s not much research on it,” said Dintrone, a retired administrator at Manhattan College and proud grandmother of nine. “I don’t know if it’s because they don’t want to waste money on one percent or what.”

“Please, God, I hope they find a cure,” she added.

This weekend Dintrone’s daughter, Patricia Fagan, 43, will participate in the 39-mile, two-day Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, held every October in Manhattan.

[JR: Clearly, I’m praying for her continued good health. Of course, anyone who throws a couple of bucks in the hat would be appreciated. One wonders if there are “industries” that grow up around a disease who’s motivations are conflicted; thus suspect.]

“I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up!”

*** begin quote ***

You’ve probably seen the commercial–or at least you’ve heard the phrase that became a piece of minor pop cultural humor.

*** and ***

I do not know why, but the image of an old woman on the floor being unable to get up really saddens me. I guess it’s partly because I think of my grandmothers. It’s also because maybe I’m scared that will be me one day–sprawled out on a floor, alone, feeling hurt and unable to call for help.

The line can also have underlying spiritual implications. Obviously, the advertisers did not intend for that. How often, though, have we fallen in life and felt like we can’t get up? Either because of a lost job, or the death of a loved one, or facing a tough physical illness, or even–especially–after we make a big mistake.

I’m not going to lie–I’m at a pretty low point in my life right now. Not too low–I know I’ve had much lower points in the past. But right now, I feel a little lost and a little down. This semester has been tougher than the last one in terms of workload. I don’t get to see my friends on campus much these days because of time, work, and schedule constraints.

I’m just lonely …

*** end quote ***

[JR: This struck a chord. Hopefully, alums reach out to those that need a friend and visa versa. I’m struck by how insightful this young future alum is; much more so than I was at that point in my life. Some of my friends and faculty at that time might even had a more blunt opinion. Well written. ]

ENDNOTE: Abortion’s unintended consequence on Social Security

http://dumpdc.wordpress.com/2011/09/24/flash-editorials-september-24-2011/

Flash Editorials September 24, 2011
By Russell D. Longcore

*** begin quote ***

Religion: Politics meet religion in Ohio – The Ohio legislature recently passed the so-called “Heatbeat Bill,” named because it outlaws abortion at the first detectable heartbeat of a human fetus. Now the bill must be passed by the Ohio Senate before it can be signed into law. It will be the most restrictive abortion law in the nation if passed. Remember folks…this is not about reproductive rights. You have all the reproductive rights you deserve…right up to the instant you get pregnant. Then your rights properly morph into responsibility…which is what REAL rights always do anyway. This is about whether or not it’s OK to kill another human being because its existence is inconvenient. Natural law bestows the right to life and NONE of us get here without some help. Good luck, Ohio. Godspeed. About 50 million lives have been snuffed out since Roe v. Wade in 1973. The oldest of them would be nearly 40 years old now…paying into Social Security and Medicare. OOOPS. Unintended consequences suck, don’t they?

*** end quote ***

[JR: Interesting the implications of social policy? One shouldn’t mess with what one really doesn’t understand. Seems so obvious to me. Guess that’s what MC did for me — made me realize how dumb I really was.]
