POSITRACTION: Solidarity and subsidiarity

http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=15264

Wisconsin bishop praises Paul Ryan, discusses intrinsic evils, prudential judgments
CWN – August 17, 2012

*** begin quote ***

Bishop Morlino then distinguished between intrinsic evils and policy decisions on which Catholics of good will may disagree.

“Some of the most fundamental issues for the formation of a Catholic conscience are as follows: sacredness of human life from conception to natural death, marriage, religious freedom and freedom of conscience, and a right to private property,” he said. “Violations of the above involve intrinsic evil — that is, an evil which cannot be justified by any circumstances whatsoever. These evils are examples of direct pollution of the ecology of human nature and can be discerned as such by human reason alone. Thus, all people of good will who wish to follow human reason should deplore any and all violations in the above areas, without exception. The violations would be: abortion, euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, same-sex marriage, government-coerced secularism, and socialism.”

He continued:

However, a conscience well-formed according to reason or the Catholic faith, must also make choices where intrinsic evil is not involved. How best to care for the poor is probably the finest current example of this, though another would be how best to create jobs at a time when so many are suffering from the ravages of unemployment. In matters such as these, where intrinsic evil is not involved, the rational principles of solidarity and subsidiarity come into play. The principle of solidarity, simply stated, means that every human being on the face of the earth is my brother and my sister, my “neighbor” in the biblical sense. At the same time, the time-tested best way for assisting our neighbors throughout the world should follow the principle of subsidiarity. That means the problem at hand should be addressed at the lowest level possible — that is, the level closest to the people in need. That again, is simply the law of human reason.

As one looks at issues such as the two mentioned above and seeks to apply the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity, Catholics and others of good will can arrive at different conclusions. These are conclusions about the best means to promote the preferential option for the poor, or the best means to reach a lower percentage of unemployment throughout our country. No one is contesting here anyone’s right to the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, etc. Nor is anyone contesting someone’s right to work and so provide for self and family. However there can be difference according to how best to follow the principles which the Church offers.

Making decisions as to the best political strategies, the best policy means, to achieve a goal, is the mission of lay people, not bishops or priests. As Pope Benedict himself has said, a just society and a just state is the achievement of politics, not the Church. And therefore Catholic laymen and women who are familiar with the principles dictated by human reason and the ecology of human nature, or non-Catholics who are also bound by these same principles, are in a position to arrive at differing conclusions as to what the best means are for the implementation of these principles — that is, “lay mission” for Catholics.

*** end quote ***

Unfortunately, the “Social Justice” crowd has equated “handouts” and “true charity”. What the Government does as “charity” crowds out the Church, the People, and civil society.

There really is no such thing as “Free Lunch”.

In my support of Homefront NJ, I’ve been taught that the “welfare check” is a trap that drags people down into a web of despair and defeat. The once young Directoress of this charity believes the object of the State Welfare bureaucrats is to keep people in the program for the rest of their lives, their chldren’s lives, and their childrens’ children’s lives. Her words not mine.

Homefront NJ is a non-sectarian non-denominational charity that seeks to show these poor souls how to make their way back to provide for themselves and their families.

I read an article over at the Acton Institute site, where the author said that “effective charity requires affiliation”. You don’t just throw money at the poor. You do have to engage them and aid them. Personally.

That’s the difference between the Liberal’s welfare check and Homefront NJ.

Hopefully, we, as a nation, can get out of the mess were are in by “solidarity and subsidiarity”.

Time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) thinks hospitals aren’t part of the Gooferment

subject: Athletic Business Newswire – Lifeguard Receives Financial Help After Off-Duty Rescue

This article sates that the Hospital, not the government, sent the bill to Clark

http://athleticbusiness.com/editors/blog/default.aspx?id=916

{Extraneous Deleted}

The Columbian of Vancouver reported Friday that Clark declined x-rays on his lungs despite swallowing a lot of saltwater, and he said he never signed any paperwork. A few weeks later, the Clark family received a bill from the hospital for almost $2,600 — $450 for the emergency room, $230 for the doctor’s fee and more than $1,900 for the ambulance. “I thought getting into the ambulance was standard procedure,” Clark, who at the time was five days removed from receiving his certification for lifeguarding at the Firstenburg Community Center Pool and the Marshall Community Center in Vancouver, told reporter Patty Hastings. “I figured I was just going along for the ride. I was fine by that point.”

# – # – #

[JR: And the “hospital” isn’t at all part of the Gooferment pseudo monopoly! Argh!!! It’s all part of inducing everyone to form a reliance on Big Gooferment. Unfortunately, it’s all part of the “system”. We have this illusion that the “hospital” is a separate entity from the oppressive over-arching “State”. The “State” is just a gang of people who assert they have a right to oppress us with their diktats. And, be well-compensated for the “service” of oppressing us. Don’t you see that there’s no difference? It’s not like the hospital is a private enterprise run by someone with a heart! Just a state owned bureaucrat pretending that it’s separate.]

As my famous counterpart would say “Good Evening Upper Eastsiders”, but since Manhattan College is not in the Upper Eastside, I’m here to say differently.

Welcome Manhattan College students, to the hot new blog that will keep you up to date on everything and anything Manhattan College and of course gossip related. Since we only have about 7 days left until we’re back in Riverdale, I decided I’d get a jumpstart and begin posting (well–gossiping) about whatever I can get my hands on. But the real fun will start once we’re all moved in and classes (and the social school year) have officially begun.

Remember though, I won’t be the only one contributing to Manhattan College Gossip Girl. I would be nothing without fellow gossipers like you! Tips, stories, even pictures can be sent in to manhattancollege.gossipgirl@gmail.com or my twitter @MCGossipGir (sorry the l was already taken…shocker there, I’m too popular for my own good).

So get ready, because you never know what somebody could be posting about you.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) touts “universal health care”

from: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961)

subject: Religious Organization Sent Lifeguard’s Bill

*** begin quote ***

Tillamook County General Hospital is part of Adventist Health, a faith-based, not-for-profit integrated health care delivery system serving communities in California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

*** end quote ***

It took me about 2 minutes to learn that Tillamook County General Hospital sent the bill and that it is not a “gooferment” operation but rather a religious one. You are so anxious to blame the government that you do not bother checking the facts. Read below about Tillamook’s status as a non-profit health care corporation.

I should add that of course Clark’s care should have been paid for by Universal Health Insurance so that there would be no bill involved.

But I should also say that given the lack of Universal Insurance I can see no reason Clark should not have received a bill like
anyone else.. An Institution like a hospital should not send bills based on whether a patient is doing a good deed or not.

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

# – # – #

[JR: And, of course, there are no rules, regulations, laws, and diktats that govern them? If it was a “truly religious organization” then the First Amendment would prevent ANY regulation? Yeah, right! Let’s see how well “universal health insurance” works in Canada, England, Europe, and other places in the world. Rich always get great care. The poor get some care. Most get poor care. Even rationing can’t get you an appointment before your condition goes terminal! Argh! And “Tillamonk County General Hospital” sure sounds like a “religious” organization is running it. There are just so many fallacies in your kit bag of ideas where does one start? Let start with the Freedom to Control one’s own body. No gang of people have the right to tell me that I must play by their rules. Gooferment licensed doctors, pharmacists, hospitals, ambulances, nurses, schools of medicine, Big Pharma, FDA, … … all telling me what I can and can not do. Don’t see it’s all wrapped up in controlling the individual? We should have a debate as a fund raiser. I be we could sell a lot of tickets. Of course, I’d be at a disadvantage because I’m just a fat old white guy injineer. Who has peeked behind the curtain!]

JEMAIL: Insull, Bob (MC1963) doesn’t think a hospital is part of the Gooferment

John: Do you really think the “Gooferment” sent the medical bills to the lifeguard’s family. More likely the PRIVATE healthcare network’s handiwork. If we had “Gooferment” sponsored healthcare there likely would have been no bill. Seems to me it’s the Pirates of Private Insurance that can do nothing right.

Insull, Bob (MC1963)

# – # – #

[JR: <1> Bob, don’t you see that the “hospital” is a greater created by Gooferment and this is “part of Government”? It’s like saying the watchmaker, who created the watch, is not “part of the watch”. In this case, the Gooferment created the entire “eco system” that the hospital lives in. It’s nature and nurture is formed and sustain by the Gooferment. Separate and distinct from? No at all. <2> Based on my experience with three insurance companies during my wife’s “last journey”, I rarely heard from them other than: “paid”, “paid”, “paid”, and few “hey doc, why aren’t you doing this this and this”. Sometimes that had a point; sometimes they just didn’t understand. My biggest hassles were from the docs and hospitals who would not submit their paperwork. Argh! By comparison the the Gooferment functionaries — the doctors, pharmacies, lawyers — the Insurance Companies are my heroes. Comparatively speaking.]

Olympian Aliann Pompey worked hard to win; now encourages young runners to do the same
Pompey directs a college preparatory program for Uptown track athletes out of the Fort Washington Armory in Washington Heights

Four-time Olympian Aliann Pompey has trained on the Fort Washington Armory track for much of her running career.

“This is sort of home and has been to me for some time,” Pompey said as we sat in the stands overlooking the state-of-the-art facility in Washington Heights. “All through college this was the home arena for us. We had college competitions here, and big collegiate meets that everyone traveled from all over the world to take part in.”

But the 34-year-old Manhattan College graduate was not able to do much training at Fort Washington before she headed to London for the 2012 Olympics last month, where she represented her native Guyana in the 400-meter dash.

Familiarity, it seems, breeds interruptions.

As director of educational development for the Armory’s College Preparatory program, Pompey works in the massive building on Fort Washington Ave. between 168th and 169th Sts., where she and her staff each year help hundreds of high school track athletes prepare for and stay in college.

It’s a constant challenge to achieve balance in our fast-paced society. Our days fly by in a blur of obligations, a depressing 24-hour news cycle, and an increasing demand for immediate gratification. When we are pulled in so many different directions, it is hard to give our all to anything, and every aspect of our life suffers. We are out of balance. In his new book, Created to Live a Balanced Life: 8 Steps to Holistic Transformation, Reverend Dieuner Joseph shows us how to restore balance and recalibrate our lives for health, love and success.

There is no shortage of self-help books out there, or books on connecting with God. What makes Created to Live a Balanced Life stand out among them is its unique approach to healing. With the same skill and compassion he shares through his newsletter and radio show, Reverend Joseph brilliantly weaves theology with no-nonsense guidance on how to change each area of our lives, day by day and step by step. Whether you are struggling with a troubled marriage, a health concern, or a problem with your boss, this book has the answer. Reverend Joseph’s advice is simple, but not a free ride. Each method in the book involves soul-searching and hard work, and while he doesn’t promise instant gratification, he certainly promises positive change for those who stick with it. In short, Created to Live a Balanced Life is an answer to our prayers.

Reverend Dieuner Joseph is the CEO of the Holistic Transformation Center, as well as the founder of Imani Temple Baptist Church and Disciple Maker Ministry. He is the author of “Restoring Honor to an Honorable Vocation” and the writer and editor of the blog, “A Pastor’s Reflection”. He also produces an online weekly devotional called “The Wednesday Word” and hosts Reverend Dieuner’s Community Call, an interactive radio show on Talkshoe.com. Reverend Joseph holds a Bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College, as well as Master’s Degrees in Divinity and Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has also studied at the University of Strasbourg in France.

It was close to midnight Sunday when Woodburn resident James Curths saw the 12-year-old boy running down the street toward him. Curths said the child, panting and out of breath, begged for help, telling him a man was chasing him.

Moments later, a man rounded the corner wearing only underwear. He stood a short distance away, trying to wave the boy over as Curths and his sister-in-law prepared to drive the boy to relatives.

“He was staring at us,” said Heather Rodriguez, 28, Curths’ sister-in-law, who was also outside. “Then he stood there with his hands on his hips like, ‘You’re really not going to give him to me?'”

Rodriguez and Curths, 35, told the man they were calling the police. Only then, they said, did the man jog away.

The man who chased after the boy that night, Woodburn police say, was the Rev. Angel Armando Perez, the parish priest at St. Luke Catholic Church in Woodburn. Early Monday, the boy gave police a detailed account of the alleged sex abuse he said occurred at Perez’s home, leading to Perez’s arrest later Monday.
