POSITRACTION: Marines gathered around and sang a cadence

Triathlon triumph
Ben Baltz has gotten a lot of attention since he hitched a ride on a marine’s back

VALPARAISO — Ben Baltz wasn’t excited about competing in yet another triathlon last weekend.

It was his third in the last few months. While he likes bicycling, running isn’t his favorite activity, especially if he can’t win doing it.

The 11-year-old had completed the 150-yard swim and three-mile bike ride in Sunday’s Sea Turtle Tri on Pensacola Beach, but about a half-mile into the run, he knew something was wrong.

“It (the leg) wobbles,” Ben said Wednesday at his home in Valparaiso.

Moments later, the screws on his prosthetic leg came loose and he went down.

What happened next, though, has captured the attention of the nation.

In the moments Ben was debating whether he could hop or maybe crawl the rest of the mile, a man named Matthew Morgan, a Marine who had volunteered to help at the youth event, stepped in.

“(Morgan said) ‘You need help?’ and I said, ‘Sure,’ and he picked me up and carried me,” Ben said.

For the next half mile, Ben held onto Pfc. Morgan with one arm and his prosthetic leg with the other.

Ben said he and Morgan didn’t really speak after their first exchange, but more Marines gathered around and sang a cadence.

As they reached the end and the crowd started roaring, Ben said he felt grateful for the help, but a little frustrated and embarrassed that he couldn’t complete the course on his own.

However you feel about the various “wars” and the military in general, this is a feel good story.

When I was in the USAF I was stationed at a Tri Service installation, and, while I thought the Marines were just slightly less nuts than the Navy guys. (Less because the Navy guys usually were nasty when they drunk. And, thought they were better than the Air Force when they weren’t.) The Marines KNEW that they were better than everyone else and felt no need to rub your nose in it. And, drunk or sober, they were always “nice guys”. IN a bar fight, (NOT that I would ever get in one. But unless it was an intra-service fight, you could count on the Marines jumping in to help. And MAN for man, they were worth ten of any bar goons. Remember in the Viet Nam War era, being in the service, which was obvious from the haircut, was not conducive to peaceful drinking. Having been called some bad names never bothered me (early training from childhood) but mess with me or my mates physically and then I have and had a problem. It was always nice to the Marines wade in on our side. It was once explained to me by one of the Marine non-coms who guarded our section: “If we’re in a fight, we get in trouble. Doesn’t matter if we start it or get goaded into it, article 13. But, if we are “rescuing” our fellow Marines, servicemen, or innocent civilians, it’s NO PROBLEM. If fact, if we don’t get involved, we get in trouble. So we LIKE to go drinking with you boys, you look weak and people pick on you then we get to help.” Not a very flattering description but all too true. So this story reminds me that “the Marines are a few good men”. Badly used by the political class! Which “We, The Sheeple” bear the responsibility for. Argh!

COLLEGE AND BEYOND…

*** begin quote ***

While I was in high school, I decided maybe I would like to be an electrical engineer. My guidance counselor told me to take German because all the best books for that were written in German – so I took a class in German – big mistake. The teacher had such a strong German accent, I didn’t know if he was speaking English or German. I dropped out after only 2 months.

I then thought maybe Civil Engineering would be it. I knew 2 guys who had graduated a year before me who were going to Manhattan College for Civil Engineering. They said to go out of state for college. They had to wear a jacket and tie to class and, since there were no girls attending Manhattan College, there was no social life. Plus, since they lived at home, their parents expected them to get a night job to help pay for the school.

Stress 29 Monday Oct 2012

Posted by artisticmotivation in Uncategorized

As most other college students the most important stressor  that i have now  is just trying to succeed in getting good grades and finish out strong here at Manhattan College. To me there is a need to finish proving myself and showing Manhattan College that i was a good choice for their school. I have always stressed since young about  grades although i know that it is not worth everything. It is still one of my biggest stressor.

H.S. Yearbook Won’t Include Student’s Baby, Suicide Victim

MENAHGA, Minn. (WCCO) – High school yearbooks are lined with memories both good and bad, but in Northern Minnesota, one high school wants to keep a few things from its pages.

A controversy is brewing at Menahga High School over the issues of teen pregnancy and suicide.

Kyle Kenyon would have been a senior this year, but committed suicide last January.

“The only way I can hold it together is with all the support we have,” said Peggy Havnes, Kenyon’s mother.

Around 100 classmates have signed a petition to get a memorial page in their yearbook, something Havnes would also like to see.

“I do think we need to use it as a teaching tool, because if we can prevent any other family from going through this, then we’ve accomplished something,” she said.

Trying to accomplish school can also be tough if you’re a new mother, but Stephanie Myers says her daughter is helping her reach her graduation goals.

One thing you after admire about the liberal elite is their unique ability to rewrite history.

Not that parochial school was much different, but at least parents volunteered their children into these reeducaton camps. The Government Skrules, aka prison preparation 101, are forced on most.

I would think both of these events are both teaching moments and events worthy of memorialization.

FIrst Amendment issues aside. Yes, those pesky rules that say Gooferment can NOT regulate speech. Currently interpreted as “no no, if more speech is possible and it ain’t fire in a crowded theater”.  This seems to be a BIG first amendment issue. Given that all schools with the exception of Liberty University are nothing but glorified arms of the Gooferment.

IT would seem that these are fact. Sad facts of “prison” life in these youngsters’ lives and should be captured.
