POSITRACTION: Life is precious

Women may be losing healthy babies due to mistaken diagnosis
in: Big Problems,Health & Fitness,Science & Technology News

*** begin quote ***

Thanks to ultra-sensitive home pregnancy testing kits, more than 200 women who discover they are expecting are having their pregnancies ended by mistake because hospital scans cannot pick up the earliest signs of life, doctors warn.

Modern home pregnancy tests, which detect hormonal changes, are so effective that women are going to hospital earlier than ever, fearing they have miscarried.

Doctors are carrying out ultrasound scans, finding no heartbeat, and consequently removing the early fetus, a health watchdog warns.

Up to 400 women may be losing their babies every year due to mistaken diagnosis of miscarriage. More than half are triggered by the problem of home pregnancy testing, according to an expert.

New guidance published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), urges doctors not to operate to remove a fetus so quickly in the early weeks of pregnancy.

The guidance also says that women should be advised that they might still be carrying a healthy baby, even if an early scan finds no positive signs.

Mary Ann Lumsden, professor of gynaecology at Glasgow University, who helped draw up the guidance, said she had “seen mistakes made” by doctors who had acted too soon.

Once again, mankind’s hubris, where our collective abilities far outstrip our understanding.

Most Jaspers tread carefully, since “we don’t know what we don’t know” was drummed into us. (At least, in engineering school, our ignorance was demonstrated to us early and often.)

Having see two babies die, and several miscarries, I hope that this tragedy is avoided.

It’s incomprehensible to me, having seen many babes grow up to be beautiful people, that life isn’t treasured.

While I’m far from a “holy man”, life should be held in awe and not taken frivolously.

Only the old should die when their life is “used up”. Never a minute sooner.

I hope that you find these thoughts as uplifting as I do.

Life goes on.

Regardless of how we screw it up.

The Christmas story ends with children being murdered and the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt.

Too many times this story is repeated.

JOBIT: Corless, James J. [MC1951 RIP]

http://www.easthamptonstar.com/?q=Obituaries/20121220/James-J-Corless

James J. Corless

By Star staff | December 20, 2012 – 10:17am

James Joseph Corless of Montauk and Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., died of a heart attack on Dec. 11 while en route to Montauk. Mr. Corless, who was known to friends and family as Jim, was the founder and chief executive of Datacom Management Sciences of Norwalk, Conn. He was 85.

D.M.S.I., as the company is known, provides equipment for large-scale communications systems for such clients as the United States Navy and Coast Guard. During the 1980s, Mr. Corless oversaw its work on the automation of many of the U.S.’s major telephone switching systems.

He was born in 1927 in Brooklyn, the first of two children of Michael and Marie Corless. When he was young, the family moved to Woodside, Queens, where later he played semi-professional football for the Woodside Incas.

In 1945, he entered the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, where he majored in marine engineering. After the academy, he attended communications officers school at Scott Air Force Base in Arizona.

In 1951, after graduating from Manhattan College with an engineering degree, he went to work as a telegraph and data communications engineer for the federal Bureau of Ships and the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C.
In 1960, Mr. Corless left Washington and moved into the private sector, as a liaison to Washington. In 1969, he co-founded Fairfield Data Technologies, which consulted on network design, equipment evaluation, and traffic analysis.

It was aboard his Hatteras Sportsfisherman boat in 1985 that he and Ms. Corless first visited Montauk at the suggestion of their hired captain. They moved the boat from Connecticut to Montauk that same year.

For the first few years, they spent summer weekends in Montauk, living aboard their boat while docked at the Montauk Yacht Club and fishing often. In 1991 he was the winner of the Star Island Yacht Club’s first-ever Mako Mania shark tournament. He loved Montauk, his family said, and spent most of his time there.

In the 1990s, they bought an apartment at the Montauk Manor. Spending time there, they noticed the derelict Montauk Playhouse nearby and later became strong supporters of a successful effort to build a community center there.

In 2008, the Montauk Playhouse Committee honored the Corlesses at its Harbor Lights gala at the Montauk Lake Club.
In addition to Ms. Corless, he is survived by two sons, James Corless II of Trumbull, Conn., and Michael Corless of San Diego, and two daughters, Carolyn Corless of San Diego and Gina Mills of Trumbull, as well as a grandchild.

A memorial service for him will be held tomorrow at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk at 11:30 a.m.
Mr. Corless’s family has suggested donations in his memory to the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation, P.O. Box 1612, Montauk 11954 or to the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, 90 Daniel’s Hole Road, Wainscott 11975.

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has two emails for us

Good Evening All Once Again,

Bob and Noreen wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and share another beautiful story. Most of you remember Baby Eloise who was in our prayers and in our hearts a little over three years ago, before she was born and afterwards due to major complications, she was a fighter. Eloise, in from Denver with her parents, is a beautiful and healthy little girl who will be three years old on January 3rd and sharing Christmas with Bob & Noreen and the rest of the family. As Bob puts it and we can agree, the power of prayer and modern medicine brought this little charmer to her Parents, Grand-Parents and the family. She is also reason for all of us to rejoice.

Please keep in your Prayers, our Littlest Jasper, Lukie, and his family. This little man is in our hearts as well.

Thank you. God Bless. Merry Christmas.

Good Evening All,

In this life, we need to find Love and Peace and enjoy the moment if possible. Acts of Kindness will always get you there.

Let me share a beautiful story that Bob Mattis shared with me just yesterday as it was told to him by his wife Noreen, one that she will remember the rest of her life.

On Friday, Noreen, after shopping in a crowded Belmont and thinking about all she had yet to do to get ready for Christmas went to Starbucks for a latte to boost her energy. Noreen was standing in line when a young woman in front of her turned and handed her a Gift Card. Very quietly she said, ” This is for you, there is a note inside.” Noreen was taken back and managed to say thank you with surprise in her voice. The young woman walked away as Noreen read this note:

” In honor of Sandy Hook Elementary School, I am performing 28 Acts Of Kindness.
You are # 5.” Peace and Love.

Noreen found the young woman as she was leaving the store. They were both crying and all that Noreen could do was hug her and whisper, ” You are a good Person.”

As Noreen says, ” this young woman found a way in which to balance, just a bit, the pain of the last week.”
Noreen focuses us so well when she says, ” That’s all any of us can do to combat the violence in our world, live our lives with peace and love.”

Thank you Noreen. God Bless.

JEMAIL: Ferrara, Richard (MC1972)

Dear CIC:

Of course there are some years when there are 53 Sundays in a calendar year! 52 x 7 = 364
If Day 1 of the year is a Sunday, Day 365 is also a Sunday, which is the beginning of the “53rd Week.”.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas and will have a Happy New Year!!
Rich

[JR: Thanks for restoring my sanity. :-) I know that there can be 53 weeks, but it’s nice to see if anyone reads my ravings. Healthy to all for the next year. When you have health, what else do you need given to you.]

ENDNOTE: How to stand out in a crowd!

http://ncc-1776.org/tle2012/tle701-20121216-04.html#.UM43iFtAGJ0.gmail

Not sure if I would have the stones of that individual. There are some characters in history that have the ability to draw and stand the line. I’m not sure I’m one of them. Like to hope I am, was, could be.

Hope I never have to find out!

I agree with the writer!

I’m sure my fellow Jaspers would not have any problem standing up for their beliefs. Their sterner stuff is what I aspire to.

Happy New Year!
