POSITRACTION: Jean Stapleton made people laugh at their own shortcomings

Jean Stapleton, Who Played Archie Bunker’s Better Angel, Dies at 90
By BRUCE WEBER
Published: June 1, 2013

*** begin quote ***

Jean Stapleton, the character actress whose portrayal of a slow-witted, big-hearted and submissive — up to a point — housewife on the groundbreaking series “All in the Family” made her, along with Mary Tyler Moore and Bea Arthur, not only one of the foremost women in television comedy in the 1970s but a symbol of emergent feminism in American popular culture, died on Friday at her home in New York City. She was 90.

*** end quote ***

So what’s positive about an obit.

Breakthru woman comedian, cultural icon, and not a bad story about her.

Honoring marriage, despite all of Archie’s flaws.

Slow-witted. Nah, I saw a quiet philosophical pick-your-battles person how always saw the best.

Kinda like a biblical parable. You have to look and think about the story.

To make such a contribution, without disgrace of “celebrity”, and make people think and look at themselves?

That’s a positive I wish I could accomplish. But each of us has our own load to carry. She made mine a little lighter.

Man living on benefits killed wife of 32 years after being overcome by ‘hopelessness’
An unemployed man stabbed to death his wife of 32 years because he felt their life on benefits was meaningless and they had nothing to do other than watch television.

Cole admitted murder and was jailed for life with a minimum term of 12 years and three months
By Claire Duffin, and agencies
4:20PM BST 31 May 2013

*** begin quote ***

Michael Cole, 56, was overcome by “chronic feelings of hopelessness” and directed his anger towards Susan, 53, Exeter Crown Court heard.

The couple, who had no children, had both lost their jobs and and faced the prospect of having their home being repossessed when their savings ran out.

Cole had tried to convince his wife to make a suicide pact but she refused.

He killed her with a hammer and knife and remained with her body at their home in Torquay for two days before calling the police on March 13 to confess.

Cole then tried to take his own life but survived.

Isn’t this sad? It’s imho a function of the “welfare state”!

The Matrix.

Nanny State and Father State will take care of all your needs.

Human beings need challenges and hurdles to overcome.

Childless in a era where we are killing babies.

Churches and charities are having their traditional functions subsumed by Big Gooferment.

Leaves people a shadow of their former selves.

Make me sad, but I can’t say I am surprised.

Even a work requirement for Gooferment welfare would have given the individuals some self-worth.

Were there no orphans or waifs or old folks who needed visiting?

Argh!

Really drives me up a tree in outrage. This is the product of the welfare state!
