POSITRACTION: Would you cut off your own finger?

Pope welcomes Archbishop of Canterbury
CWN – June 14, 2013

*** begin quote ***

Pope Francis met on June 14 with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Justin Welby, and the two affirmed the need for a shared Christian witness and joint efforts to promote social justice and peace.

Greeting the Anglican leader to the Vatican, Pope Francis used the words that Pope Paul VI had used when an earlier Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey, had visited in 1996. The Pontiff welcomed Dr. Welby “not as a guest or a stranger, but as a fellow citizen of the saints and the family of God.”

*** end quote ***

Interesting that these two leaders can put aside differences and celebrate the similarities.

With “Secular Progressive” threats to any organization of faith, it’s important to recognize our common humanity.

Isn’t that what the Parable of the Good Samaritan is all about?

Friendly rivalry is fine. We all know that Fordham students have to sleep with the Ram to be admitted. But, we have to recognize the boundaries of common sense. After all, Alma Mater doesn’t have a Law School and Fordham did lend us a “President”.

I’m sure we can find important causes to join together against — Saint John’s, Notre Dame, … Syracuse?

I like the Dali Lama’s expression: “We are all fingers on the same hand; would you cut off your own finger?”

JEMAIL: Kuhn, Rob (MC1973) points out “corporate welfare”

Re: [Distribute_Jasper_Jottings] JASPER JOTTINGS Week 24 – 2013 June 16
ENDNOTE: The price of the dole

# – # – #

John, you can’t solve a problem by complaining about the effect and ignoring the cause.

WHY did they wind up on welfare?

Listen for that giant sucking sound of the boys you prefer over Gooferment, the giant-global *free* market players, suffocating people’s livelihood ( and often self respect along with that, it seems ) as they continue to squeeze the money supply into fewer and fewer hands. 400 billion dollars in tax evasion in the U.S. and some of that is corporate welfare that’s partly funded by taxes actually PAID by people living in poverty. In the big picture, your point of view is entirely un-Christian.

(Are you tuned in to Brazil? That is a thriving economy, but with cockeyed distribution comes protest. Stay tuned and see if they’re able to stem that tide, and what it takes to do so.)

Rob

Kuhn, Rob (MC1973)

# – # – #

[JR: I think that “the dole” includes the Crony Capitalism that is practiced today. For example, the “immigration” bill has a annual handout to the Las Vegas casinos. That’s the corrosion of the Gooferment and Crony Capitalism. It’s not just “the little people” on “the dole” that’s the problem. That dole rots everything. Something for nothing; paid for by others. Robbing Peter and Paul to feather their own nests. I think the French Revolution started over that. “Immigration” will always be a problem as long as we have “the dole”. Free milk; stray cats. Government doing “charity” for people or corporations by stealing from others is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. Gooferment and its “dole” is training us to depend on it and not ourselves, our families, and our community. Sorry, if my rant wasn’t complete enough. And, thanks for the correction.]

JEMAIL: Scarlata, Richard M. (MC1964) on required humanities courses

Richard M. Scarlata

10:41 AM (4 hours ago)

Reading the piece linked below, I was reminded of a conversation that I had about twenty years ago with a neighbor who was then in his late 30’s and was attending Pace and majoring in Accounting. It was summer, and we were both on the elevator; I carrying my briefcase on the way to work and he carrying textbooks on his way to summer classes.

He had sometime earlier asked for my help on an accounting matter and I, being interested in his scholastic progress, inquired as to how his studies were going and what courses he was taking in summer school. His response was a revelation.

He said he loved his accounting and other business courses but hated the “time-wasting Liberal Arts crap” that he had to take, so he was getting his Lit courses “out of the way” in summer school in order to concentrate on “the more important business courses” in the Fall. I merely smiled and said, “well have a good day.”

On the train downtown I thought about his attitude as compared to my college experience, where there was a required core curriculum in the humanities for all schools, business, as well as engineering. It dawned on me that my neighbor’s attitude was that of a bookkeeper or a mechanic, as opposed to that of an accountant or an engineer. Thank God for the humanities courses required in my days at Manhattan College.

[JR: Us fat old white guy injineers remember being told that “those humanities would be useful when we flunked out and went up to the business school”. If that wasn’t scary enuf, we were also told that “business people would be poor when technology took over everything”. Darn, misled again!]

THE granddaughter of a Roscommon-born woman from New York has won the prestigious title Queen of Roscommon at a beauty pageant held in Castlerea at the beginning of the month. Elizabeth Ann Hanrahan, 20, is a junior finance student at Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York. Hanrahan’s grandmother (on her mother’s side), Nora Clarke-Dowd was born and raised in Tibohine, Co. Roscommon and moved to New Jersey when she was 20. Hanrahan’s maternal grandfather came to New York from Tipperary when he was a teenager. Hanrahan’s father’s family also originate from Ireland but “his roots are slightly more detached from the country,” explained the newly crowned queen. Hanrahan was accompanied by her mother and grandmother to Roscommon for two weeks in July where she was one of six girls vying for the title of queen.

Robert J. Corrigan
Obituary

Corrigan, Robert J.

Robert J. Corrigan, a 25 year resident of Wilton, CT, passed away at home on June 26, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.

Born August 14, 1940 to Helen and Joseph Corrigan he was raised in Babylon, NY. He graduated from Seton Hall High School in 1958 and went on to Manhattan College, Bronx, NY. In 1962 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Later, he earned a Masters degree in Industrial Administration from Union College.

He joined IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1962. Two years later he married Regina (Jeanne) Owens of Sayville, NY on June 20. In the following years their five sons were born.

During his 32-year career with IBM he assumed increasing responsibilities holding managerial positions in the U.S. and in Paris, France. Ultimately he became an IBM Vice President, and President and CEO of the IBM PC Company.

Following his retirement from IBM in 1994, Mr. Corrigan was President and CEO of IMAX Corporation in Toronto, Canada. He transformed the business before retiring in 1996.

His deep commitment to Manhattan College led him to serve on the Board of Advisors of its School of Business. The Board of Advisors helped structure the school’s management processes and outcomes assessment measures, and was instrumental in the school’s accreditation process with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International in 2003.

Mr. Corrigan was an American Cancer Society volunteer, driving cancer patients to their appointments.

He was an avid golfer and a member of both Silver Spring Country Club in Ridgefield, CT, and Cape Cod National Golf Club in Brewster, MA. Golfing with his sons, his brothers and friends gave him great pleasure.

As an enthusiastic life-long learner his interests were wide and far reaching. His passions included books, music, astronomy, art, stamps, history, and math. He was, always, an avid reader. He loved to travel and to cook unusual recipes from around the world. Museums delighted him both here and abroad.

A dedicated family man, Bob Corrigan thoroughly enjoyed the company of his sons, their spouses, and the 12 grandchildren. Gatherings in Wilton or at their beach house were numerous, fun and memories to be treasured.

He is survived by Jeanne, his loving wife of 49 years; their sons and spouses: Robert Jr. (Julie), Timothy (Christine), Paul (Kellie), David, and Kevin (Carolina); 12 grandchildren: Shannon, Katie, Jack, Madeline, Thomas, Charlotte, Amelia, Harry, James, Norah, Oscar, Bella. Also, his brothers Michael Corrigan of Mattapoisett, MA and Joseph Corrigan of Poughkeepsie NY, two nephews and a niece.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 10AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Route 7, Wilton, CT. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, 70 Ridgefield Road, Wilton, CT. JFOUND: Can you ever go home again?

http://www.sweetestsomethings.com/2013/06/28/nostalgia/

On Wednesday we drove up to our alma mater for some wedding related business.  It was so nice to be back on our old campus and see how things have changed.  The grounds of the school are beautiful and it made me so nostalgic for all of the great times we had there.  I met some of the best people I know on this campus (or the neighboring bars- don’t judge me) and met my fiance here.  There’s nothing like the college years, so if you are currently in college remember to work hard and enjoy every minute.  I hope you have a fabulous weekend! xo

MAN GETS THREE TICKETS AFTER HAVING A HEART ATTACK WHILE DRIVING…BUT ONLY TWO WILL BE DISMISSED
Jun. 14, 2013 12:07pm Liz Klimas

*** begin quote ***

A 20-year-old from New Jersey had a heart attack while driving, causing a car accident and landing him with three traffic tickets. Even with a doctor’s note in hand, the court is only allowing him to get out of two of these tickets for his medical emergency.

Argh!

You all probably know as little L libertarian what I think of the Gooferment.

Tell me this isn’t priceless.

(Not as good as Middlesex County NJ send my deceased wife a Jury Duty notice two years after her death. Note her death certificate came from Middlesex County. And, her will was probated there. But, boy, the Gooferment was sure able to recapture her last Social Security check within 12 HOURS with NO problem.)

Why do the citizens of the Pepuls Republik of Nu Jerzee put up with this nonsense?

I’m no longer there. I’m in Virginia on my way to the Free State of New Hampshire.

But, the Sheeple and Clovers keep on demanding that the Gooferment <synonym for the act of procreation> them at every turn.

Argh!

How dumb can humanity be?

Pretty dumb!
