POSITRACTION: Quick thinking saves trapped passenger

Advisory: Quick thinking resident saves trapped passenger in car crash.

A South Brunswick man’s quick thinking helped save a Princeton couple after their car went off the roadway and flipped over Friday evening. At 5:58pm South Brunswick Police responded to Friendship Road near Haypress Road on a reported motor vehicle crash. Arriving officers found a 2006 Chrysler Sebring flipped over on its roof in the driveway of 107 Friendship Road. The 70-year-old driver had been partially ejected from the vehicle and his 60-year-old wife remained trapped in the vehicle. The resident of 107 Friendship Road, Raymond Buck age 52, had run to the vehicle after the crash and saw the dashboard was crushing the female passenger. Mr. Buck ran back into his shed and retrieved a pickaxe. Mr. Buck wedged the pickaxe against the dashboard and was able to pull it off the woman’s chest allowing her to breath. The Monmouth Junction Fire Department arrived and worked for forty minutes to free the woman using the Jaws of Life. Monmouth Junction First Aid and paramedics transported the couple to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Both are listed in serious condition.

An investigation determined the male driver was having chest pains and was attempting to pull off the road just prior to the crash. The driver blacked out and his foot pressed on the accelerator. The vehicle accelerated off Friendship Road, hit a dirt pile, then became airborne and flipped over. It appears the driver suffered a heart attack prior to the crash.

Chief Raymond Hayducka gave credit to the resident’s quick actions. “By all accounts it was Mr. Buck’s quick thinking and decisive action that saved this woman. He pulled the dashboard back allowing her to breath while rescuers worked to cut her out of the vehicle. Mr. Buck represents the best of our community, and I thank him for his selfless act,” said Chief Hayducka.

Milt Campbell’s legacy celebrated in Plainfield
By Dave D’Alessandro/Star-Ledger Columnist

*** begin quote ***

That’s why Milt Campbell’s real story isn’t about hurdles and high jumps and javelin throws. In a memorial service in a sunny auditorium Saturday — in the city he loved like a nurturing father — we were reminded it’s really about the humanity of this giant of a man.

He was the greatest athlete New Jersey ever produced when he died last November at his home in Gainesville, Ga., but his athletic achievements – the Olympic gold in Melbourne, the Olympic silver in Helsinki, the NFL/CFL career – almost felt like a secondary matter to the friends and family assembled at Emerson Elementary school in Plainfield.

*** and ***

Charlie Pratt was there, as wide-eyed as any of them. “Milt made me a champion,” said Pratt, the Manhattan College legend and 1957 NCAA champion from Palmyra. “I won the nationals because he built me from the ground up.”

THE SALT JUNKIE CULTURE
By Greg Evans

*** begin quote ***

So where does that leave us now? Maybe this will give you something to think about tonight while you lay in bed suffering from insomnia trying to subtly flip on the dirty showtime late night movies hoping that your spouse doesn’t wake up and catch you. Or maybe you are a loser and your spouse packed up and ran off with your brother and you are alone with an empty bottle of wine staring up at the ceiling dreading having to go into the office in the mourning to listen to the boss complain about what a schmuck you are. But life doesn’t have to get you down. The trick is to face it with a little sense of humor and the realization that that terrible day you are having is going to end and who knows, maybe the next day some Victoria’s Secret model or a J-Crew model will sit next to you at Balthazar’s for breakfast and beg you for a date. Talk about optimism. Maybe if you used 1/1,000 the amount of salt your used to, you might become as cynical and optimistic as me. The first major I ever considered during my freshman year at Manhattan College in the Bronx, NY was psychology. I have always been fascinated by people, human nature, human sexuality, human diets, human everything and I imagine you can tell this is the case from my rantings. We are not strangers in this world, we are individuals, granted some downright lunatics, but still individual souls and each one with a story to tell. But if you keep ingesting the records amounts of sodium you won’t be around long enough to tell your own story. Einstein once said, “I’m not sure if I’m the one that’s crazy, or if everyone else is!” You won’t find that kind of wisdom in the salt shaker.

The Seven Deadly Sins of the K-12 Education System
Costly and Ineffective Programs and Strategies by Philip S. Cicero, Ed.D.

This book is for anyone who believes that reducing class size, doing more homework, being taught by experienced teachers, using technology, receiving remediation, repeating a grade and increasing school time will improve student achievement. The reason this book is for you is because these long practiced academic interventions just don’t work. Not only do they not work but they are overly priced, costly and put an unnecessary financial burden on school districts and taxpayers. So why do we continue to use them? We use them because we believe they work. However, that’s not the reality. Recent research demonstrates that those respective interventions have little, if any, impact on improving student achievement. This book reviews the research debunking the myths, estimates the various wasteful costs of these ineffective myths and offers practical and alternative means to improving student achievement.

Philip S. Cicero, Ed.D.

Dr. Philip Cicero retired in 2008 after 35 years of service as a coach, club advisor, teacher, building and school district administrator, and his last 11 years as superintendent of schools.

He has taught physical education and special education at all grade levels from K-12. After teaching for 12 years, he entered administration and assumed the role of special education chairperson then director of educational services. Later, he became an assistant superintendent responsible for curriculum and pupil personnel services. He concluded his fulfilling career as superintendent of schools on Long Island, New York.

In 2008, following his retirement, he began a second career as an adjunct professor of education in the school of education at Adelphi University. He has taught a variety of courses to both undergraduate and graduate level students including child development, children with special needs, and schools, community and society. He also serves as the department’s co-chairperson of the Advisory Council, along with the dean of education.

Since his retirement he has published a number of articles covering a range of timely topics such as class size, seniority of teachers, testing for early childhood students, homework, mentoring new administrators, and the value of today’s high school diploma. These articles have appeared in the New York State School Boards Newsletter, School Administrator, American School Board Journal, along with articles appearing as op/ed pieces in a regional newspaper.

His formal education started with Manhattan College (B.S.), followed by Adelphi University (M.A.) and then New York University where he earned his doctoral degree (Ed.D.). While attending NYU, he also completed his course requirements for New York State certifications in school building administration and school district administration at Hofstra University.

While quite pleased with his educational contributions, he remains slightly disappointed at times that he never achieved his childhood dream of playing professional baseball for an often hated New York team. His childhood allegiance has since changed to the other side of that town. While his playing dreams have never fully disappeared, his passion for the game continues as a fan. He and two of his lifelong and closest friends from fourth grade – Lou and Jim – travel annually to different cities each summer to see out of town baseball games.

He lives in New York with his beautiful wife Joanne, along with their loyal dog, a white Havanese named Evita. The three periodically spend time in Florida to escape the New York winters.

To keep his mind clear and open to new writing ideas, he finds his relaxation and inspiration by running and bicycling for various charitable causes and also by playing golf and occasionally taking swings at a local batting range. Some dreams never go away.

I’d like Jaspers to know that my website, http://www.BetterFlicks.com has been re-launched. All the bugs aren’t worked out yet, but I hope you’ll pay a visit and tell others about it.

What I’m trying to do is improve the quality of movies by letting those who make movies exactly what you (and we all watch movies) want to see in movies.

It is my hope to be able to provide discounts on movie ticket and concession purchases, as well as purchases of DVDs and Blu-Rays.

I’d also like to make it easier to make movies, increase movie production, and create more work for those in the industry.

JFACEBOOK: Gallaher, Peter “peardarban” (MC1965) warns of a Christian holocaust in Egypt

My letter to the President was sent a couple of weeks ago, asking that he begin to address this holocaust in Egypt, and across the world of Islam…going on for centuries, now. Today I sent a letter to Sen. Kelly Ayotte, a Catholic communicant in my Parish. She has an even greater responsibility.. to my way of thinking, to use her position to demand the president take some action. This afternoon I write to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, married to a Lebanese Catholic. Don’t think I won’t mention THAT connection in my letter. Oh, BTW, HAVE YOU CONTACTED ANYONE IN HIGH OFFICE ABOUT THIS YET? If not, why wait. People are being murdered for no other reason than they pray. Shame on Islam for condoning and encouraging and being the inspiration for this horror. Shame.

*** begin quote ***

It is unfolding in front of our very eyes. During an age of endless information, it is impossible to ignore, yet that is exactly what the world seems to be doing. Christianity, the places where the Gospel was first brought by the apostles, the amazing cultural developments that ensued, and the wisdom which became world-wide and eternal owes all its fortunes to the people and places which are now under endless attacks by the most brutal Islamic thugs since Mohamed’s armies conquered and enslaved these places originally.

Rape, beheadings, torture of women and children while the hearts of men are eaten by the armies which are hell-bent to spread Sharia and overthrow the legitimate governments that had been in place. The burning of churches and slaughter of Christians along with the all out destruction of monasteries, libraries and orphanages is reported as a sidebar, but in fact is the goal of mostly foreign fighters coming to dip their knives into the blood of the innocent. Priests and deacons murdered, with their sacred vestments than worn by the killers as trophies.

Perhaps the most unusual aspect, as an American, is to realize that your own country is backing this apocalypse. The Obama White House likens the burning down of several Christian churches in Cairo and the murder of those simply for being the followers of Christ as remarkably consistent with the events during the American Revolution. A statement that loses the shock value of being so inane, by the sheer cruelty it attempts to dismiss.

Twins are worlds apart as they await A-level news
7:53am Thursday 15th August 2013 in News

*** begin quote ***

TWINS Alex and Holly Coates-McDowall are accustomed to celebrating their achievements together, writes Maisie Cook.

But when the A-level results are released today Alex will be halfway across the world pursuing his football ambitions in New York, while Holly remains in “old York” awaiting university acceptance.

The pair, from Tadcaster Road, both studied for their A-levels at York College, and in Alex’s case, although he had “always been sporty and played football”, his childhood dream to become professional “didn’t work out.”

The college gave him the opportunity to play for the college’s football development centre as well as studying A-levels in maths, further maths and physics, allowing his dream to once again become a possibility.

He was also lucky enough to play for the England colleges team in Estonia and Scotland, an accomplishment which ultimately enabled him to secure the Manhattan College scholarship where, along with doing a degree in maths, he will continue to play football at a high level.

[JR: Laff, maybe Alma Mater is putting the pads back on and getting back into football. Let’s schedule Notre Dame.]

ENDNOTE: Benghazi is this generation’s Pearl Harbor

CBS NEWS REPORTER SAYS WHITE HOUSE, FBI DENIED HER ACCESS TO BENGHAZI DETAILS, PHOTOS: ‘NOT EVEN ONE PAGE’
Aug. 16, 2013 7:00pm Dave Urbanski

*** begin quote ***

CBS News journalist Sharyl Attkisson says she’s been after Benghazi information through the Freedom of Information Act since last fall when the U.S. consulate in Libya was attacked, leaving four Americans dead.

Well, Attkisson says she finally got her answer Friday.

Turns out the White House and FBI don’t quite see the value of releasing the info.

*** end quote ***

Sorry but “we” had our Ambassador killed and four men died waiting for help that never came.

We should be asking every politician what happened.

No incumbent, of either party, should get a vote until the truth comes out.

Like, who ordered the stand down order.

Like, where were BHO44 and Hilary when this was going down and what were they doing.

Like, put everyone under oath in front of a Grand Jury and get answers.

Argh!

The Sheeple are going to get us all put in the camps.
