POSITRACTION: Shouldn’t Catholics understand and cheer “virtual morality”?

EDUCATION
PUNDIT TACKLES IDEA OF ‘VIRTUAL MORALITY’ IN POWERFUL VIDEO AFTER STUDENTS DEFEND VIOLENCE & RAPE IN VIDEO GAMES
Sep. 22, 2013 12:28pm Oliver Darcy

*** begin quote ***

A conservative pundit for a college news outlet questioned whether there is such a thing as “virtual reality,” in a new video uploaded to YouTube on Sunday.

“Is there such a thing as virtual morality?” Caleb Bonham, host of Campus Reform’s “Crossover,” asked. “Where is that line drawn?”

*** end quote ***

“Morality which depends upon the helplessness of a man or woman has not much to recommend it. Morality is rooted in the purity of our hearts.” —Mahatma Gandhi

Violent video games, porn, and such undermine our “morality” muscle.

It’s a shame that folks don’t understand it’s “mental poison”.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) cheers for Pope Francis

Dear Jasper John

If you quote FOX and disbelieve Media Matters you are in big trouble!!
If you send out material without checking its validity you have bigger trouble.
If you think Ebenezer Scrooge is a hero you have even more trouble/

I would suggest that you face reality.
And start listening to Pope Francis

Sincerely yours,

Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961)

[JR:

I don’t believe ANY media, politician, and bureaucrats. I collect for the consideration of others. I do very little ORIGINAL reporting.

This is a near zero cost effort; hence “validity checking” ain’t going to happen.

And, I don’t think Ebenzer is a “hero”. I don’t have “heroes”. I do think he’s misunderstood, unfairly criticized, and use a foil for the Gooferment Welfare advocates. I’m not going to go into depth on it other than to say: the Gooferment takes from the makers and “gives” it to the takers. That’s theft. Ebenezer was making his contribution to society, producing, and employing. He should be free to “enjoy” the fruits of his labor as he sees fit. If we can tell him what he “must” do, then any one can tell you and I what we “must” do.

I’m very much a realist and a pragmatist imho.

As far as Pope Francis, jury’s still out. I like what I see initially, but one robin doesn’t make a Spring. And, he is part of “the Establishment Church”. We’ll just have to see what results.

But as always, thanks for your participation. I’ve been told some of our fellow Alums that they enjoy our “tifts”.

Shall we discuss Gooferment Skrules, aka Government Reeducation Camps aka the new churches of State Worship, Atheism, Earth worship, and Socialistic indoctrination?

First “Andy’s Run” Brings Runners, Walkers and Families to Sag Harbor to Celebrate Neidnig
Posted on 05 October 2013

*** begin quote ***

The first ever Andy’s Run 5K was held in Sag Harbor on Saturday. There were winners, trophies and the usual collection of elite runners, walkers and families out for a leisurely stroll.

But the sport of running itself was most celebrated, being that the event was named for Sag Harbor’s own running man Andy Neidnig, one of the greatest athletes to ever reside on the East End.

Neidnig passed away at the age of 93 in 2012, but not before he compiled a most impressive running career. Neidnig was a celebrated marathoner and World War II veteran who raced in more 30 marathons, including one at the age of 80. His first marathon was in 1938 in Boston, where he placed ninth overall.

Neidnig attended Manhattan College in the late 1930s, and broke the national collegiate record for the two-mile at the time. His times in the half-mile and mile were just seconds off the world records.

The Sag Harbor Lion’s Club, which presented the event on Saturday, had a table full of awards that Neidnig had won over his career, which spanned seven decades.

JFOUND: Davidson, John Joseph [MC1955 RIP] remembered at the 21st annual Rockland Life Chain

http://rocklandrtl.org/2013/10/06/be-part-of-the-life-chain-sunday-oct-6/

Be Part of the Life Chain — Sunday, Oct. 6
Posted on October 6, 2013

The 21st annual Rockland Life Chain will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 2 to 3:30 at the intersection of Route 59 and Middletown Road in Nanuet.

The Life Chain is a peaceful, prayerful public witness of prolife individuals praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. This year it is being held in memory of the late John Davidson, of Congers, a longtime defender of the right to life. John passed away on June 16, 2013.

IN MEMORY OF JOHN J. DAVIDSON — DEVOTED TO GOD, FAMILY, and COUNTRY
John Davidson

John praying the Rosary at the 40 Days for Life.

John was a regular with the Our Lady of Guadalupe Rosarians, who pray every Saturday morning at 11 a.m. year round outside the Planned Parenthood office in Spring Valley.

Also, for six years — from the fall of 2007 until the spring of 2013 — he participated in the 40 Days for Life, taking numerous hours fasting and praying to end abortion.

John was born in October 1933, in the heart of the Depression. He experienced hard times. His father, out of work and ill, became hospitalized for tuberculosis, and his mother, Josephine O’Leary Davidson, became the breadwinner. With an outstanding score on the Civil Service Exam she landed a job of toll collector on the George Washington Bridge. She worked there until the end of World War II and then obtained a permanent position with the New York City Transit Authority.

Determined to meet the challenges he had to face, John took to education like a duck to water. He graduated from Sacred Heart grammar school in 1947, and his hard work paid off with a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College in 1975, a master’s degree in English from Fordham University, a PhD in Administration from St. John’s University, and a JD from Pace University Law School in 1982. He was admitted to the bar in 1985.

In 1956 John’s education was interrupted when he was drafted into the Army, where he served as a paratrooper. He later joined the Army Reserves as a second lieutenant and advanced through the ranks, eventually retiring with the rank of Brigadier General.

In 1960 John met the love of his life, Kathleen Patricia McNally, a registered nurse. They were married in August 1961. John and Pat had four children: Kathy Patricia, Siobhan Mary, John Joseph III, and Joseph Dignam Davidson. John lost his beloved wife of 46 years on St. Patrick’s Day 2007.

John was a life-long educator. In 1960 he began teaching English at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst, N.Y. In 1969 he was assistant principal of Lincoln Junior High School. In 1970 he became principal of the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, in the Inwood section of the Upper Bronx. In 1971 he served as an assistant principal in Pittsfield, MA. Two years later returned to New York to be assistant principal of Clarkstown North High School in New City. John held that position for 17 years until his retirement in 2000. Then he was elected to the Clarkstown School Board in 2001, becoming its president in 2006. He retired in 2012.

Also close to John’s heart throughout his life was the Knights of Columbus. John became a Knight in 1966 and received his Fourth Degree in 1967 in Oceanside, N.Y. When he returned to Rockland County, he joined the Cardinal McCloskey Council and the Joyce Kilmer Assembly 698. He was one of the founders of the Pope John XXIII council 7104 in Congers and was elected that council’s first Grand Knight. He has also held the offices of District Deputy, Faithful Navigator of Assemly 698, Past Association Chairman, and Commander of the Honor Guard, which he considered the “singular honor of his life.”

We thank the Knights of Columbus Triune Council 2052 for providing the information for this tribute.

Claritas Speaker Addresses U.S. Air Quality At Susquehanna

Published on October 10, 2013

Sonia Kreidenweis, professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University, will present Susquehanna’s 2013 Claritas Distinguished Lecture in the Sciences on Oct. 22. Titled “Clearing the Air: 25 Years of Visibility Observations in U.S. National Parks … And What They Tell Us About Our World,” the free, public lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in Stretansky Concert Hall of the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.

Kreidenweis has worked with the National Park Service since the early 1990s, analyzing data and conducting special studies of the air quality in protected wilderness areas and national parks. Her work has improved our understanding of the role particles play in visibility reduction and has produced fascinating insights into the origins of air particles.

Kreidenweis holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Manhattan College. She earned master’s and doctorate degrees in the discipline from California Institute of Technology. She is a fellow and past president of the American Association for Aerosol Research and a fellow of the American Meteorological Society.

The Claritas Distinguished Speaker in the Sciences Series is funded by an endowment established by George E. ’64 and Margaret Lauver ’66 Harris to support lectures, seminars and residencies by nationally recognized leaders in business, government, education, the sciences and other areas of public interest.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has some instruction for us

Good Evening All,

This prayer was written for our Brother, Owen McKeon, at the request of another Fellow Jasper, Jerry Lynch, regular attendee and speaker at our Retreat. It was created by The Prayer Tree Ministry of the Church Of The Presentation, Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. It has been distributed to Jerry’s Prayer Community as they join us in praying for Owen, his wife Marie and their family. We join in raising our voices once again for Our Brother In Christ, Owen.

It is a beautiful prayer and I share it in its’ entirety. Thank you Jerry for your thoughtfulness and caring. God Bless.

Phil Colon

PrayerTreeLogoChurch of the Presentation – Prayer Tree Ministry

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

We have a request from prayer volunteer, Jerry Lynch, for parishioner Owen McKeon who was suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer in August and is currently in hospice. We are also asking prayers for his wife Marie and their family as they seek hope and serenity for their beloved husband and father, Owen.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Almighty and Eternal God, we ask that You Bless Owen with Your Healing Hands to comfort him in body and spirit. May he and his family grow in trust of your Goodness and Hope in your faithfulness, even in this time of illness. Fill them with the Peace of your Presence and acceptance of your Holy Will. Lord may they bless and praise you. All this we pray in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

At this time in Owen’s life, please protect him from pain and suffering. When You see fit, welcome Owen into your loving arms and make a new home for him with you, where he will be reunited with his loved ones who are in your glory.

During these difficult days, please give peace and comfort to his family and friends. Please strengthen them while they are lovingly by his side, and lift them up as they tend to his needs. Please comfort them as they cope with the separation, when Owen’s care is transferred from their loving arms to Yours. Above all, grant them the grace to acknowledge Your Holy Will and know that whatsoever You do, You do for the love of them. In Jesus’ name we pray and ask you for these blessings. Amen.

Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me;
for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden light. Matthew 11:28-30

BERNARDS TWP. – There’s a contest in the Board of Education election this year but it’s more a matter of happenstance than differences of opinion.

Four candidates, including incumbents Michael Byrne of Tanglewood Drive and Elaine Kusel of Granville Way, and first-time candidates Christopher Viereck of Grist Mill Drive and John Groot of Briar Lane, are vying for three, three-year board terms in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

*** and ***

John Groot

Groot, 72, owns his own business, Groot WEB Services, which creates and manages web sites.

He previously worked in sales and product strategies. He was educated in physics and accounting, and holds a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y.

A township resident for 33 years, he lives with his wife, Margaret. He has no children.

Groot has been a board member for 17 years on the Academic Decathlon, a Wood-Ridge-based group that conducts a series of interscholastic competitions for high school teams.

“I feel I have a knowledge of organizations and organization functioning, and I believe I can bring my background and experience to the school board,” he said.

Groot freely acknowledged that he has no agenda. He even noted that as of last week, he had yet to attend a school board meeting.

“I really don’t know enough” to comment on school issues, he said. “For me to shoot off my mouth would imply that the school board is not functioning well, and I don’t know that it’s not.

“I got in because I believed they were short of people, and if they were short of people, I could help out,” he said. “I don’t want to get involved in partisan politics. I want to make sure the school board is there for the children – that would be my main goal.

“I have no preconceived notions,” he added. “I’d like to see what has and hasn’t been done.”

JNEWS: Reynolds, Richie [MC???? RIP] Class 4-67

http://www.examiner.com/article/marine-corps-veterans-honor-their-dead-officer-candidates-school-classmates

Marine Corps veterans honor their dead Officer Candidates School classmates

October 10, 2013

On October 10, 1966 a group of young men stepped off buses at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia to begin Officer Candidates School (OCS). They were the members of the 42nd Officer Candidates School Class.

On October 10, 2013, that same group of men returned to Quantico to dedicate two memorials to their 44 classmates who died in Vietnam.

More than 700 young men stepped off those buses at Quantico into the loving arms of their Drill Instructors (whom they called Sergeant Instructors) and began the transition from civilians to Marine Officers.

Only about 70% of the men who stepped off those buses completed Officer Candidates School and were commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the Marine Corps.

Of the 550 who completed OCS, 144 went directly to Pensacola Naval Air Station for flight training. The rest of those young lieutenants went to The Basic School where they were trained in the basics of infantry tactics. After they graduated from either The Basic School or flight training, 99% of those lieutenants received orders to Vietnam.

Forty four members of the 42nd Officer Candidates School Class were killed in Vietnam: 11 of the Marines who went through flight training and 33 of The Basic School Class 4-67 graduates.

One of those 44 young men was my friend and college classmate, Richard Peter Reynolds, who was Killed in Action on January 20, 1968 near My Loc in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.

“The future’s uncertain
And the end is always near.

Roadhouse Blues
John Lee Hooker

In 2006, the surviving members of USMC Basic School Class 4-67 formed an association (Marine Officer BC 4-67 Association, Inc.) in anticipation of their first reunion, forty years after they got off those buses in Quantico.

The idea to erect a bronze plaque at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and a granite monument at The USMC Basic School in Quantico was conceived in early 2012, just prior to the 45th reunion of the class of TBS 4-67.

The memorials would cost $30,000 and fund raising efforts commenced during the reunion.

By March 2013, the bronze plaque was already in place at the Marine Corps Museum, and Dick Hudak, the president of the association, was doing everything possible to contact the families of the 44 Marines so they could attend the dedication ceremony on October 10, 2013. The association even hired a private detective to track down some of the families.

On March 20, 2013 I got a telephone call from Dick Hudak asking for my help in locating Richie Reynolds’ family. After I talked talked to Hudak, I contacted the Manhattan College Alumni Office, and they helped me locate Richie Reynolds’s brother.

Every time I think of Richie Reynolds, I see him standing at the top of the steps leading up to the Quadrangle at Manhattan College, the stairs by the statue of the Virgin Mary. I was at the bottom of the steps and he was at the top waving to me. He had a big smile on his face. He usually did.

The association booked a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn in Dumfries, Virginia, just outside Marine Corps Base Quantico, and the surviving Marines and the family and friends of those who died in Vietnam arrived on October 9th:

In the morning, the guests boarded buses for Marine Corps Base Quantico.

At 9:00 AM on October 10, 2013 the Marine Officer BC 4-67 Association held a dedication ceremony at the National Museum of the Marine Corps Chapel. It was raining heavily, but heavy rain never stopped anything in Vietnam, so it didn’t stop the dedication ceremony.

At 11:30, those attending the ceremony ate lunch with the young lieutenants currently enrolled in The Basic School.

At 1:30 PM the members of the 42nd Officer Candidates School Class held a dedication ceremony at the granite memorial at The Basic School.

The people attending the ceremony were scheduled to tour the National Museum of the Marine Corps, but unfortunately, the museum was closed because of the Government Shutdown.

At 7:00 PM there was a buffet dinner and a recognition ceremony for the family members and friends of the 44 classmates who attended the ceremonies. Family members in attendance were presented with a replica plaque in remembrance of their loved ones.

This is the wording on the Plaques.

United States Marine Corps

Forty-seven years have passed since those young men stepped off those buses in Quantico, but the surviving members of Basic School Class 4-67 have never forgotten their fallen classmates.

Semper fidelis.

[JR: Ignore that I couldn’t capture a pretty picture. (My limitations.) When my wife needed blood, there was NEVER a question that she would get what she needed. (And trust me, she needed a lot of blood and platelets.) I owe all the folks who did it not knowing who they were helping. I’ve paid forward all the platelets she got (in a losing effort), but not the whole red good blood. Yet! It truly is the gft of life. Whatelse can I say. As a very young fat old white guy injineer, I had a certain Brother who taught “ingineering measurement” who “encouraged” us to donate blood with the admonition: “You’re probably NOT too stupid to bleed correctly”!  http://reinkefaceslife.com/2010/08/18/inspirational-hopefully-youll-give-a-pint/   In my old age, I think was saying: “gentlemen, you are too dumb to know the good you would do if you’d go donate some blood.” Sad to say, now I understand. When I hit the Pearly Gates, I’m expecting an express lane for “blood donors”. Are you willing to bet I’m wrong? Doesn’t cost you squat! Sadly, some one of your fellow humans really needs it!]

I always have a chat with the drive organizer at Assumption (one of the ushers, very nice fellow) and I’m trying to get the word out so the drive will be better attended. It really doesn’t take much effort, after all, and it does make a big difference to the lives of others.

:-)
all best,
MaryAnn

[JR: Special place in my prayers for the people that donated all the blood and platelets Frau Reinke got in her losing fight. It would have ended a lot quicker except for all those good people. Can’t make it and you really don’t want to buy it. No one ever questioned, they just poured it in like water.  So what ever I can do to convince other to help, I will.]

ENDNOTE: Communion?

No communion for Nancy Pelosi: Vatican court head

*** begin quote ***

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has no Catholic right to be granted Communion, said the leading cardinal of the highest court at the Vatican.

Mrs. Pelosi should be denied Communion until she changes her advocacy views on abortion, Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke said, according to the Western Center for Journalism.

That’s canon law, not opinion, he said. Canon 915 states that Catholics who are stubbornly contrary “in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”

And Cardinal Burke said Mrs. Pelosi fits the definition.

“Certainly this is a case when Canon 915 must be applied,” he said, the Western Center for Journalism reported. “This is a person who obstinately, after repeated admonitions, persists in a grave sin — cooperating with the crime of procured abortion — and still professes to be a devout Catholic.”

*** end quote ***

It’s about time that the “brand” stands for something.

Now what happens?
