POSITRACTION: TZEDAKAH, NOT CHARITY

2015-Jan-11

http://zelmanpartisans.com/?p=544

INSPIRATION
TZEDAKAH, NOT CHARITY
DECEMBER 31, 2014 Y.B. BEN AVRAHAM

*** begin quote ***

The RaMBaM (Maimonides) distilled the Talmudic Sages’ principles of how to give tzedakah to a list from least to best:
1. Giving begrudgingly
2. Giving less than you should, but giving it cheerfully.
3. Giving after being asked
4. Giving before being asked
5. Giving when you do not know the recipient’s identity, but the recipient knows your identity
6. Giving when you know the recipient’s identity, but the recipient does not know your identity
7. Giving when neither party knows the other’s identity
8. Enabling the recipient to become self-reliant

*** end quote ***

I like #7 and #8.

It goes to the core of “My Brother’s Keeper”.

At risk of interjecting some political thought, that’s what’s wrong with the Welfare State and Big Charity. They are not motivated to SOLVE the problem.

While it’s true that we will always have “the poor” and “poverty” — and the discussion of what’s truly “poverty” as if having lots of stuff that the truly poor die without — we can have a civil society where people are free. Free to make mistakes and free to learn, change, and thrive.

Taking away free will is as bad as designing a system that’s inescapable, demeaning, and disempowering.

I’m sure my fellow Jaspers have realized this long ago, but for me I’m further back on the road to Enlightenment. After all I am a fat old white guy injineer.

JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973) on encouraging the Stazi mentality

2015-Jan-12

From the Jottings on the Vigilante Handicap Enforcers:

“Who died and left these bozos the “parking lot police”?”

The same folks who’ve revived using the “Good Citizen (or Good Student) Snitch Mentality” to enforce smoking bans. It used to be that laws were passed that were so infrequently ignored that we could have enforcement only by designated and trained police. Today we have so many stifling regulations that are so widely resented by significant portions of the populace that we’ve encouraged the Stazi mentality: if you see someone violating a regulation either report it or “enforce” it in some way yourself.

The smashed side mirror is an example of that sort of enforcement. The pregnant smoker getting shot in a parking lot is another.

COMMENT: A comment thinks violence is OK?

2015-Jan-12

Jack commented on ENDNOTE: The handicap placard bring out the anal sphincters

2015-Jan-10 http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/fl-disabled-tag-20150102-story.html Parking lot vigilantes abuse woman …

The author of the article failed to inform the reader as to the qualifications required by Florida to legally obtain a disabled parking permit. If they had bothered to looked this information up they would have discovered that cognitive disorders do not apply. In Florida only conditions that impair ones ability to walk and blindness apply.

A person with short term memory problems but not walking problems could just as easily pick the back of the parking lot as their long term parking location as they could the front

[JR: Well, the State issued it. And, we know how immoral, ineffective, and inefficient they are. Besides, what gives someone the right to use violence against someone else? Call a cop to issue a ticket, maybe. But break a mirror! Inexcusable.]

JEMAIL: Marketing Intern Opportunity at Good Shepherd School – Inwood

Carolyn:

I hope that Manhattan can help Good Shepherd.

On a humorous note, that perhaps the intern can use, my 2009 novel “CHURCH 10●19●62” “features” GSS as the locale. (Two bucks on Kindle) And, I draw on my youth there to make the story have “texture”. One of the comments was that “everyone had their first crush on a girl in grammar school.” I used it on the jacket.

That’s one of the two books I brought to my presentation to the Marketing Club in 2010.

I, of course, send an autographed copy to BOTH the Manhattan College and the GSS library.

If I can be of any help with this project, then don’t hesitate to ask.

Dear Professor Predmore:

Hope you have successfully settled back in following the intersession in Frankfurt. Having taught a summer session engineering course for the first time last July, I have some sense of how much more intense the fast track instructional approach must have been when accomplished away from one’s familiar environment.

With the Spring semester about to kick off, I am reaching out to you in my capacity as a member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Good Shepherd School (FOGSS), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Since it opened its doors in the 1920’s, Good Shepherd School has been the educational starting point for countless Manhattan College grads including my cousin F. John Reinke and I.

Like all too many ADNY schools, Good Shepherd began to slowly fade in the 1990’s. Ultimately, declining enrollment and mounting expenses put GSS on the list for closure in 2010. Thankfully it was rescued by the leadership of Pastor Fr. Robert Abbatiello (MC 1982 Business) and the extraordinary generosity of a deeply dedicated group of Jasper led alumni (FOGSS). Together, we helped save GSS and today it is again a vibrant school carrying on the work of providing the children of Inwood and surrounding northern Manhattan and Bronx neighborhoods with a quality Catholic education. Our goal now is to make Good Shepherd self sustaining by further growing the enrollment.

FOGSS is thus looking to draw on some knowledgeable marketing support that could be provided by a local college marketing major. Given the above cited Jasper connections and our proximity to campus (215th St stop on # 1 train line), Manhattan is our first stop for recruiting. If you think this is an intern opportunity that might be of interest to one of your students, I would welcome the chance to explore it by phone or in person.

Best regards,
Pete Sweeney

[JR: Of course, any one can help. Anyone who buys the Kindle or print version as a result of this story and tells me will get a donation to FOGSS in their name. Every little but helps. I’d be happy to autograph any printed copy when I see you somewhere. I guess I can autography your Kindle but why you’d want that beats me.]
