POSITRACTION: The first one to jump saves lives

Europe, Obama Hail Americans Who Stopped Train Attack

*** begin quote ***

Among the other heroes of the night-time drama was a Frenchman on his way to the toilet who was first to tackle the assailant as he entered the carriage, and a 62-year-old Briton who still had blood spattered over his shirt as he spoke to journalists on Friday night.

But it may have been Stone, 23, of Lajes Air Base, Azores, who took the biggest risk. Eskel said his nephew’s height of at least 6 feet 2 inches (1.9 meters) and Jujitsu martial art and American football background probably helped him.

“He was the first one to jump on him, he’s the one who got cut up … none of us are injured but Spencer took a few injuries and he just had no fear,” 23-year-old student Anthony Sadler, told Reuters.

“That’s our friend so once we saw him go we had to go and join him … we couldn’t have just left everybody die like that. It was a crazy situation, said Sadler, a student at Sacramento State University.

*** end quote ***

There’s a survival theory about the three types of reaction — 50% freeze, 40% panic, and 10% act. And, it’s the action ones that survive.

So we have about 5 of the people in that car who acted.

Pretty interesting.

In another story, the criminal asked for his gun back?

As a pro-life pro-choice little L libertarian, I’m surprise that the criminal survived.

When defending yourself, most training is to kill. But, I guess these fellows were really good at controlling their emotions. After all it’s “kill or be killed”; not “restrain the perp or be killed”.

Criminals are not stupid. That’s why mass murderers seek out gun free zones.

We have to just change the incentives.

Argh!

Anyway, hope that I can act like this hero and save some lives.

JNEWS: Pavlista, Alexander [MC????] UNL specialist receives lifetime award

2015-Sep-04

http://geringcitizen.com/articles.php?ID=7780&Title=UNL%20specialist%20receives%20lifetime%20award+[published+2015-09-03]&Member_ID=&l=&First_Name=&Last_Name=

UNL specialist receives lifetime award
September 03, 2015

Dr. Alexander Pavlista, potato specialist and crop physiologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff, has been awarded the Honorary Life Membership (HLM) by the Potato Association of America (PAA) for lifetime achievement and impact on the potato industry. It is the highest honor given by PAA.

Pavlista received the honor at The PAA banquet recently in Portland, Maine. According to the PAA website, “The most significant way to recognize outstanding contributions to the potato industry is the awarding of Honorary Life Membership (HLM).”

Pavlista has been the Potato Specialist at the University of Nebraska since 1988, when he came to Scottsbluff from Princeton N.J., where he was a research biologist with American Cyanamid Co.
Pavlista was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and came to the United States in 1951, growing up in New York City. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College, he worked for two years at Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee.

Returning to New York, he received a Ph.D. from City University of New York in 1977. After working as a Research Associate for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for two years at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, he joined American Cyanamid Co. in 1979.At UNL, his potato work has centered on plant growth regulators and hormones, environmental response and deficit irrigation, vine desiccation, and the control of pests such as potato psyllids and early blight.

He released the cultivar Red Cloud and has published five book chapters on potato. He has published 42 journal articles on potato and 25 on other crops, such as corn, wheat, dry bean, canola, and camelina. His extension achievements include the website Potato Education Guide (cropwatch.unl.edu/potato), 20 volumes of the newsletter Nebraska Potato Eyes, 22 Extension publications (NebGuides and Circulars), more than 20 years of cultivar evaluations (many published in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “National Potato Germplasm Evaluation and Enhancement Reports”), and pest control reports and alerts for potato growers.

In nominating Pavlista, members of the potato industry said the honor was well deserved.
“I have had occasion to talk with several of the Nebraska growers that Alex’s research has helped. They were all highly respectful and grateful of this New York transplant and his many efforts to help them be better growers,” said Sam Thornton of Syngenta Corp. “His newsletter was anticipated and well read by many in the potato industry and Alex always chose timely subjects that would benefit all potato producers.”Joe Guenthner of the University of Idaho said “The PAA Honorary Life Membership instructions say that nominees should ‘have made significant contributions to the potato industry … from activities related to research, extension, education, production, processing, and marketing. Through PAA and through his faculty position as a distinguished potato scientist and educator, Dr Pavlista has accomplished that, not just for one or several, but for all of those activities listed.”
Phillip Nolte of the University of Idaho noted the award (HLM) was created to honor exceptional and supremely dedicated people like Dr. Pavlista.

J. Creighton Miller Jr. of Texas A&M University also said the award was well-deserved. “I have known Alex as a respected colleague for more than 20 years, have followed his career with interest, and have been most impressed with his extension work, including the website ‘Potato Education Guide’ and his newsletter Nebraska Potato Eyes.”

KEY WEST A RICH SMALL TOWN

*** begin quote ***

Market down 530 points friday. Monday will tell if the market was adjusting or we are at the start of another recession. China the culprit. All has to do with oil.

Trump announced 36 thousand for last night’s rally. He had to get a stadium to hold all the people. Turns out the stadium was only half full. Twenty thousand. Still a good number. In fact, an excellent one.

*** end quote ***

The market volatility imho is due to China but not the way everyone is pitching it. By disconnecting the Yuan from the US Dollar, China has prepared the way to exit from buying US Treasuries to maintain the value of the Yuan versus other foreign currencies.

I believe that the Wall Street types are realizing that days of the US Dollar as the world’s reserve currency are numbered.

AND, this move puts the FED on the horns of a dilemma.

(a) if the FED raises rates, then the Chinese will not be buying Treasuries in the quantities that they have, the FED will have to buy — like QE3-4-5, and the market will see the flaw.

(b) if the FED does not raise rates, they will admit they are powerless and the “man behind the curtain” will be exposed as “having no clothes” (i.e., the much touted recovery is political propaganda).

Like most of the doomsayers, the best Joe-Sixpack strategy is to “get small in your hole”. Eliminate debt, but real assets, and maintain a widely diversified equity portfolio. Think of Cyprus and Greece as the model for going forward.

We need the “political class” to eliminate the deficit with “real cuts” while paring back the welfare / warfare state. Especially the job killing “regulations”, the Crony Capitalism, and the vast increase in “entitlements”.

Argh!

Trump & Sanders have tapped into the disgust of Main Street with the professional political class.

Argh squared!!
