POSITRACTION: 150 miles to do a mitzvah!

300 Stranded Israelis in Montana Fed Kosher By Local Kindness
by Terry Turner – Nov 16, 2015

*** begin quote ***

When an El Al flight from Israel to California developed a problem, it was forced to land in Montana–where a problem of a different sort developed on the ground. Fortunately for the 279 passengers and crew, people who live in the “Big Sky Country” have hearts as big as their sky.

Because a new plane needed to be delivered, no one knew how long the hundreds of Israelis would be stranded there – sequestered in the terminal because there were no customs officials there. One thing was evident. Despite its worldly name, there was no kosher food at the Billings Logan International Airport.

*** and ***

Donna Healy, a member of Billings’ Jewish community rounded up her daughter Kat and friend Victor Sargent, then purchased crackers, cereal, hummus and other snacks to deliver to the airport.

Meanwhile, Rabbi Chaim Bruk heard the news while traveling to Minnesota. He called his wife, Chavie Bruk in Bozeman, Montana and asked her to help. She immediately loaded her car with kosher food and drove 150 miles to Billings with her three kids

*** end quote ***

Wow!

150 miles to do a mitzvah!

Very impressive.

I hope that I can be that charitable.

Some folks really do go above and beyond.

JEMAIL: Flynn, Bro. Gregory (MC1957) — hunger doesn’t mean ‘late for dinner’

2015-Nov-23

ADDIS HOPE DESTITUTE CHILDRENS PROGRAM

Dear Donor Partner of Addis Hope,

November 26th, Thanksgiving Day in the States, is a happy day of feasting and gratitude. We in Addis Hope are grateful that our destitute, marginalized children will have at least one hot meal every school day
thanks to our generous donor partners. Explaining this is no mean feat, since it is dificult to explain being hungry to some who may think that means being late for dinner.

We are thankful that the Good Lord has inspired our partners to give generously without counting the cost; that their hearts are open to our children who can do nothing material for them in return except remembering them in daily prayer – a great return on any investment. We hope that you will set a place at your table for one of them this Thanksgiving.

Enjoy the blessings of the day!
Brother Gregory Flynn

I don’t understand the context of Hugh being used by young women for “career advancement” is anything other that just sad for all involved. So, now we have a giving Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Well, Manhattan College just asked for money, again. This is my reply .

# – # – #

Dear Gabrielle,

I have thought long and hard over the past few years about “giving” to Manhattan. As a graduate of the Prep and the College, I realize the wonderful, affordable education I received from 1960 through 1968. Manhattan was the “step up” for myself and my classmates from the Prep. We, the children of predominantly blue collar low to moderate income workers broke free with that education and it is appreciated. Over the past decades, I have seen Manhattan’s tuition skyrocket.

If I, an old Washington Heights boy were suddenly transported from 1965 to 2015, in the same circumstances with a mother working part time and a father working as a bartender for a major hotel in the city . Manhattan would have been out of my reach, far out of my reach. I have re- evaluated things. I am a product of the Catholic School system and proud of it. Over the years I have watched the grammar schools struggle and die while places like Manhattan just keep on building new buildings for less students than they had in my era. The schools that got us off the streets and drilled us to become successful disappear, one after another year after year while Manhattan doubles and then triples the size of its administrative staff. The memories of the good nuns and brothers who educated us are with me as if it were yesterday yet I see those who are left struggle in retirement as the cost of a four year education at a “Catholic” college or University goes north of $ 200,000.

This year as I have for the past three, I will give the gift of education. I intend to bundle every educational gift I have made in the past to Manhattan, St. Joseph’s, St. Peters, Don Bosco High School, St. Peters Prep into one gift, then double it and send it off to somewhere it is needed, badly. In this case, Incarnation School at 175th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue in Washington Heights. There, they continue to educate the children of low and moderate income predominantly Dominican families who have replaced my generation. Perhaps someday, those very children will be able to compete for the few available, affordable spaces at places like Manhattan.

Cardinal Dolan, who said Mass at our 50th Grammar School reunion a few years back told an anecdote about being accosted at a building dedication on a college campus (Manhattan?). An alum, badgered him first about the huge donation (millions and millions) he had made to build this edifice. Then about the Cardinal closing his former grammar school. The Cardinal turned and said, “Had you taken one of those millions and given it to the school that gave you a start in life, it never would have closed.” That story was an eye opener for me. I only wish that I had a million to give.

So, it is with some regret that I decline the offer to contribute to Manhattan. There are places, more important, that need it much more.

Sincerely,
Stephen K. Trynosky ‘68

LI Water Commissioners Receive Town Law Nassau County Civil Division & Statutory Guidance Training Session From Joseph Frank Esq. of Sapienza & Frank
Press Releases
By Allison Gayne
Published: December 01 2015

Westbury, NY – November 30, 2015 – Water commissioners from across Long Island recently received a special training session focused on Town Law Nassau County Civil Division and Statutory Guidance for Water Commissioners that was led by Joseph Frank, principal of Sapienza & Frank Attorneys at Law of Massapequa, NY, during a meeting held by Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association, which is comprised of water commissioners representing 21 Long Island water districts. Mr. Frank’s discussion included the history of Town Law dating back to 1932, as well as the relationship, powers and duties of elected commissioners. This included limitations and what constitutes a conflict of interest.

The comprehensive training session included Town Law Article 13, which covers voting eligibility, annual elections, and other matters governing Commissioner-run districts, along with General Municipal Law Article 18, which defines important concepts such as the terms “contract” and “interest” as well as setting Conflicts of Interest rules for government officers and employees. In addition, Mr. Frank explained The Nassau County Civil Divisions Act, which became law in 1939, and established provisions regarding the operations of water districts in Nassau County. The presentation was followed up an open vigorous question and answer period.

NSWCA President Thomas P. Hand, Commissioner of Massapequa Water District, commented, “Mr. Frank’s extensive water industry background brought simplicity and clarity to many issues that can be cloudy and confusing. Thanks to knowledgeable speakers like Joseph Frank, NSWCA’s Continuing Education and Training Series has been highly effective. The information and expert presentation he provided was greatly welcomed and appreciated by all attendees.”

A graduate of Manhattan College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Government, Mr. rank earned his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law. One of the founding partners of Sapienza and Frank established in 1989 that specializes in Municipal Law, Mr. Frank is a resident of North Bellmore, NY.

As an intern, I was sent to a luncheon to cover an award ceremony. I think I had the assignment because it was deadline day and no one else could be spared. When I arrived back at the office, I was told that they needed my story right away rather than next week to fill an unexpected hole. I had 90 minutes. For a cub reporter that was the equivalent of being down by one run with two outs and the bases loaded. I wrote faster than I ever have and my editor pulled me aside and told me it was my best writing all summer, “From now on,” she said, “you always have 90 minutes to write your stories.” Therefore, I blame Nancy (Bob Varettoni) for my creating tough deadlines for myself.

As a pro-life pro-choice little L libertarian, I fail to understand committing murders to stop murders.

Eye for eye leaves the whole world blind.
