POSITRACTION: “Superheroine” mode; I am woman; hear me roar

2016-Jan-17

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/01/10/virginia-woman-19-lifts-burning-truck-to-save-her-fathers-life.html?intcmp=hplnws

VIRGINIA

Virginia woman, 19, lifts burning truck to save her father’s life

*** begin quote ***

A petite 19-year-old Virginia woman who lifted a large burning truck off her father said Sunday that she just snapped into “super mode” to save his life.

Charlotte Heffelmire turned into a real-life 5-foot-6, 120-pound superhero when she rushed to her father’s aid Nov. 28. Eric Heffelmire was working on a pickup in the garage when a jack slipped, pinning him under the vehicle. The mishap also caused a gasoline spill which set the truck and the garage on fire.

*** end quote ***

Since I’ve created a “Diogenes Award” category, this week I’ll create a “Helen Reddy”.

Remember the hit: “I am woman; hear me roar”? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Woman

I’ve known, and know, many strong women in my life. I think that’s America’s “secret weapon”. When I look at “foreign lands” who keep “their” women “barefoot, pregnant, and uneducated”, I really just want to say “thanks you fools”. Like Rush jokes, “with half my brain tied down just to make it fair”, they have lost more than half their collective brains.

Here’s an example of the hidden power we all have when properly motivated. It’s often said, that we only use 10% of our brains. So why can’t we all lift cars? It’s simple! We don’t need to and we don’t believe we can.

Remember the line from the original Star Wars?“

[Luke:] I can’t believe it. [Yoda:] That is why you fail.” — Yoda (Fictional character from George Lucas’s “Star Wars” movie)

My other favorite is about training a baby elephant in a way that they are limited by their beliefs.

http://www.careers360.com/news/4336-Motivational-story-Prakash-Iyer-success-mantras

*** begin quote ***

So even though it’s just a chain and a little wooden peg, the elephant stands still. It remembers its limitations, and knows that it can only move as much as the chain will allow. It does not matter that the metal stake has been replaced by a wooden peg. It does not matter that the 100 kilo baby is now a 5,000 kilo powerhouse. However, the elephant’s belief prevails.

*** end quote ***

We’re so much like that elephant with the self-limiting beliefs.

And this young woman just proves the point to me.

How about you?

Introduction

I am a successful trial attorney who helps clients protect and defend their inventions in complex intellectual property litigation.  Technology companies of all sizes, from Fortune 50 companies to start-ups, have relied on me to take care of their most sensitive intellectual property matters.  I have represented companies such as Microsoft, Dell, Velcro and Insight Technologies in intellectual property litigation throughout the country and the world.  I have handled matters before federal district courts and appellate courts, as well as the International Trade Commission (ITC).  I also have managed international litigations and proceedings before the European Patent Office.

I have been named a “New England Super Lawyer” by Thomson Reuters, and a Massachusetts “Super Lawyer – Rising Star” by Law & Politics magazine and the publishers of Boston Magazine.  I was also recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as one of 15 “Up & Coming Lawyers.”

My practice also focuses on general client counseling, including strategic management of patent and trademark portfolios, validity and infringement analyses, licensing, and pre-suit investigations.  I have extensive licensing experience, including initiating programs to monetize patent portfolios.  My client-focused approach to litigation and licensing puts a premium value on the client’s input and insight and ensures a close and mutually beneficial relationship.

COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) disagrees about several things

2016-Jan-18

Dear f. John,

How can you make the blanket statement that unions are not necessary in first world countries? There is plenty of evidence of attempts to exploit power relationships in today’s environment – which only collective action has a fair chance of resisting.

Why do you think alma mater shouldn’t negotiate a fair agreement with the adjuncts. Individually, they can easily be picked off, but together they should be able to come up with a fair agreement. It is truly part of Catholic social teaching.

As for med care – Medicare is generally acknowledged as doing a pretty good job. Someone is going to make decisions about costs and coverage – I’ll take my chances on the gov instead of an insurance company exec who wants to preserve profit for the company/shareholders

Toner, Mike (MC1972)

# – # – # – # – #

Dear Mike:

Very easily, we can divide unions into two major groups: unions of Gooferment workers and unions in private industry.

In the first group, there is an unholy alliance between the politicians and bureaucrats in Gooferment with union members and leaders to screw the taxpayer. Money flows from the taxpayer to the union and back into the politicians’ “campaign funds”. Sorry, but that has to stop. Many states and municipalities are crippled by unfunded and unplayable “pension and benefit” packages.

In the second group, there is another unholy alliance between the managers of the companies and the unions to screw the ownership (stockholders). Money flows, that should go to the stockholders, to the unions for wages, benefits, and pensions. The management “buys” labor peace so they can earn big bonus from the stockholders and get out before the unfunded and unplayable results hit. Gooferment Motors is a classic example of this.

Unions are a disaster.

In the case of Alma Mater, the adjuncts are free to move should they feel that they are not being compensated fairly. Slavery is illegal. I don’t want the Gooferment telling Alma Mater that they are not “catholic”. As far as “social teaching”, I think that and “social justice” are code for socialism. I’d prefer a free market where capital and labor are fairly priced without any infringement.

As far as Medicare, acknowledged by whom as doing a good job? There is a VAST body of evidence that shows that it’s a sewer of waste, fraud, and abuse. Frankly, my experience with my wife and insurance companies was better than with the medical administration management, who were subject to the Gooferment’s nonsense.

You seem to fail to acknowledge that insurance companies making a profit is a good thing AND the competitive marketplace will enforce fiscal discipline. Screw too many Customers and they walk. Make to big a profit margin, competitors enter. It’s the Gooferment that distorts this with tax policy and regulation. Look at life insurance — relatively lightly regulated, cheap, available, and pretty abuse free. Why can’t I buy my health insurance like life or car? Because the Gooferment (Obama/SCOTUS care) mandates all sorts of “benefits” I don’t want. Imagine you had to have your car insurance cover “oil changes”? Argh!

The problem today is that everyone want to live at someone else’s expense.

“Someone” does NOT “have to make decisions about costs and coverage”. You should be making those decisions. From a vast array of choices. Look at life insurance. Term versus whole. 10-20-30 level term. Dollar amounts from a few thousands to a few million. With a vast range of prices depending upon risk. And, some folks are uninsurable because they waited to buy until they were sick.

Argh!

Seems so obvious to me?

Thanks for getting the blood boiling.

Officers give CPR, save man’s life

Two officers from the 50th Precinct administered life-saving measures to a man having a heart attack at the 5987 Broadway Dunkin’ Donuts on a recent weekday, according to authorities.

A source at Manhattan College confirmed Mr. Singh has taken time off to recover since the incident.

“We got him to the hospital okay and we later found out he was a Manhattan College security guard so the next night, we went to the security booth and asked how he was doing,” Officer Preiss said. “I’ve always enjoyed the part [of the job] where you actually help someone in need.  We do a lot of what you call lift jobs where we help old people that fall out of bed — that’s the kind of thing that I enjoy.”

spent a few hours sitting with him yesterday. He appears to be in a coma so I don’t know if he could hear me. He has no physical paralysis. The nurses and other brothers said they would take turns sitting with him through the night. Many Manhattan people have visited including Mrs Heckendorn’s daughter (remember her mother…the secretary in the  MP Director’s office). His brother from Long Island is planning on coming tomorrow.

Fed-Up Bar Manager Sets Record Straight After Woman Slams His Business for Allowing Dying ‘Junkie’ to Ruin Her New Year’s Eve Dinner
Jan. 4, 2016 11:34am
Kaitlyn Schallhorn

*** begin quote ***

Kilroy’s manager, Chris Burton, saw the irate customer’s complaint, and while he expressed his relief that she would not be patronizing the establishment any longer, he did take the time to set the record straight — and his response is going viral.

Burton wrote:

Hi Holly, thanks for reaching out! We love feedback, whether it be positive or negative. I especially like feedback like this so others can see the disgusting people that we have to deal with sometimes.

First of all, the ‘overdosing junkie’ that you speak of was a 70+ year old woman who had a heart attack. Thankfully she was finally revived at the hospital and survived. It sounds like you were very concerned about her so I thought you should know. This poor lady, who was celebrating New Year’s Eve with her husband and son, had to be placed on the floor of a completely packed bar and have her shirt removed in front of everyone so the paramedics could work on her.

But I can completely understand why you think being intoxicated assholes that didn’t understand your bill should take priority over a human life. I especially appreciate you making your server (who doesn’t curse) cry as well. I’m sure she really enjoyed working on New Year’s Eve just to deal with people such as yourself. I personally had to leave a show to take a phone call from an emotional manager telling me someone died at Kilroy’s and that other employees were not doing so well dealing with this. (At the time they didn’t know that she was going to make it.) So I understand how inconvenient this was to your night.

But honestly, I’m glad to hear you won’t be coming back to Kilroy’s because we wouldn’t want anyone as cold hearted and nasty as you returning. I appreciate anyone who chooses to spend their money at Kilroy’s until they act like you. You can take your money anywhere else after that, and I won’t lose a second of sleep over it. Happy New Year!

*** end quote ***

I would hope that everyone would remember the value of human life.

For someone to be that self-centered, is shocking to me.

I hope I never think like this boob. Or if I do, I keep my mouth shut and my fingers off the keyboard.

Argh!
