The family blighted by a ticking timebomb: Four people have died of rare genetic condition leaving surviving relatives praying for a miracle cure

* Family suffers from familial amyloidosis which can lead to fatal organ failure
* Concerned relatives explain it has been ‘picking them off’ for generations
* The disease is caused by abnormal protein deposits in tissues and organs
* Currently no cure for illness and 600 new cases are diagnosed a year in UK

Four members of the same family were killed off by a genetic condition and now surviving relatives are praying for a miracle cure as they live with the reality that they could be next.

Sisters Maggie Maguire and Pauline McCartney, from Glasgow, both died of familial amyloidosis, as did their brother George and father Paul. Sadly, it is now beginning to affect relative 37-year-old Gary Maguire.

An illness caused by deposits of abnormal protein, called amyloid, in tissues and organs throughout the body, familial amyloidosis can lead to organ failure and death within as little as year

Wow!

This is a sad “death sentence”?

It’s a stunning finding.

How do you deal with such information?

Not that it’s not something that most of us have to deal with.

I guess the “human condition” is to overcome whatever is faced.

Hopefully, we can all learn “courage” from this family.

In fact, the most interesting aspect of that Sunday afternoon broadcast may have been its announcer.

Allen Walz, 30, was a New Yorker who had been a Golden Gloves boxing champion and an outstanding rower. A graduate of the Hun School and NYU, he worked for the Dale Carnegie Institute before, in 1934, establishing the rowing program at Manhattan College.

A naval officer in World War II, he rose to lieutenant commander, earning a bronze star when, commanding a destroyer escort on D-Day, he rescued 100 soldiers whose transport vessel had been sunk by German fire off Normandy Beach.

Following the war, Walz coached rowing at Wisconsin and Yale. He also was, according to the book Cloak and Gown by Robin Winks, a secret CIA recruiter who persuaded hundreds of postwar collegians to sign on with the spy agency.

“Once every three weeks he would meet with a CIA agent at the reflecting pool in Washington, passing on names and evaluations,” Winks wrote.

But for that Eagles-Dodgers game, Walz was practically anonymous, sitting with a microphone in his hand and his chin on the railing of a balcony box as he strained to follow and report on the dim action below.

JOBIT: Davignon, Deacon Paul M. [MC???? RIP] on 2016-Feb-05

2016-Feb-08

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/timesunion-albany/obituary.aspx?n=Paul-M-Davignon&pid=177635517

Deacon Paul M. Davignon
Obituary

ALBANY

Deacon Paul M. Davignon: teacher and lover-of God, of life, of family, of his extended family of students, colleagues, and parishioners. Born July 3, 1941, died February 5, 2016, at Teresian House, Albany, of Alzheimer’s disease.

From his youth in Rhode Island, to his studies as Christian Brother Adrian James, FSC at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.; for a master’s at Manhattan College; and for a master’s at Teachers’ College of Columbia University, Paul’s life path has been through teaching and his Church. His constant caring and bright, peaceful outlook drew many to him.

For over 40 years he taught religion and world languages at Christian Brothers’ Academy, Oakdale, Long Island; St. Cecilia’s High School, Englewood, N.J.; St. Aloysius Academy, Jersey City, N.J.; and Dwight Morrow High School, Englewood, N.J. where he was friend and mentor to many and involved in the teachers’ union. Ordained a Deacon in the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J. in June, 1978, his ministry evolved through New Jersey parishes, especially Church of the Ascension in New Milford and, finally, at St. Matthews RC Church, Voorheesville.

We hope that friends and family might join us and St. Matthew’s Parish, 25 Mountainview St., Voorheesville, NY 12186, in celebrating Paul’s entrance into eternal life: Reception of the Body and Funeral Vigil will be Friday, February 12, from 4 to 8 p.m.; Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, February 13, at 10 a.m., followed by a luncheon reception in the Parish Hall.

Paul, the son of the late Maurice George Davignon of Pawtucket, R.I. and the late Marie Jeanne-Blanche nee Paradis of New Bedford, Mass., is survived by his wife of 46 years, Maryann Postava-Davignon of Delmar; his three daughters, Laure-Jeanne Davignon of Knox, Christi-Anne (Seth) Plough of Wayland, Mass. and Marielle Aimee Postava-Davignon, PhD of Bangor, Maine; his granddaughters, Madeline Jeanne and Isabelle Aimee Plough; his brother, Robert [Elizabeth] E. Davignon, Esq; many cousins, nieces, nephews; and innumerable students who knew they could always count on him, one of whom told him one looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. (Carl Jung) Our deepest thanks and appreciation to our friends at Teresian House in Albany for their dedicated care.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are being accepted for the Paul M. Davignon Scholarship for Peace at Dwight Morrow. Checks made out to the scholarship can be mailed to Law Office of Kathleen M. Toombs, 157 Barrett St., Schenectady, NY 12305. reillyandson.com

Good Evening All,

With a heavy heart, I share these prayer requests from Joe Quinn.

We pray for Glenn, one of God’s littlest Angels, an infant who was called home to God’s Eternal Embrace.

We pray for Glenn’s Parents and two Sisters as they suffer the pain of this great loss. We pray that they will find peace in the sure knowledge that he is at peace in God’s love and that they were Blessed to have Glenn in their lives. Words fail at a time like this.

We pray too for Mary and Joseph. This Family with such beautiful names have just learned that they are facing a very difficult pregnancy. We pray that God”s love gives them the strength and trust in God to bring them through this difficult time and the challenges that may lie ahead.

Thank you. God Bless.

JNEWS: Bouyer, Ken [MC1990] selected speaker for the iSchool’s convocation

2016-Feb-09

https://ischool.syr.edu/articles/news/view/senior-class-selects-ken-bouyer-convocation-speaker/

February 9, 2016
By: J.D. Ross

The Class of 2016 at the School of Information Studies (iSchool) today announced the selection of Ken Bouyer, Director of Inclusiveness Recruiting at EY, as the speaker for the iSchool’s convocation ceremonies in May.

In his position with EY, Bouyer is responsible for a developing a recruiting strategy that builds and attracts diverse and inclusive talent pools for EY’s member firms in the Americas. The firm strives to reflect the changes in world demographics, taking into account the new mix of cultures and individual characteristics that build their talent pool. In his work with the firm, Bouyer frequently serves as an industry group spokesperson on both diversity and recruiting trends at events and with the media.

Senior Class Marshal Tim Kowalsky, who helped to lead the selection committee for the School’s convocation speaker said, “we felt Ken was uniquely qualified to speak about the human side of technology, which is something that has always been at the forefront of our minds during our time at the iSchool. His job revolves around the fact that as technology changes and evolves, so do the people developing and working with it every day.”

“Hearing about the experiences and life lessons he has collected on the path to his current position and level of responsibility will be applicable and valuable to any iSchool graduate as they transition into the professional world, no matter the industry,” Kowalsky added.

“We wanted our fellow graduates to feel motivated, whether they are going on to graduate school, starting their careers, or still in the process of looking for their first job,” said fellow Senior Class Marshal Fanta Dicko. “Ken is an inspirational speaker who can help deliver this message.”

Ken Bouyer – EY

In addition to his work at EY, Bouyer serves on the dean’s advisory council at North Carolina A&T, the accounting advisory board at Arizona State University, and on the corporate advisory partners council at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

He is a lifetime member and a current Corporate Advisory Board Member of both the National Association of Black Accountants and the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting organization. He is a past board member and international president of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor organization for financial information students and professionals. Bouyer has also served on the board of directors for the Federation for the Schools of Accountancy, and is a recipient of their “Practitioner Service Award” for his distinguished service to the profession of accounting and accounting education.

Bouyer has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Manhattan College, and has been with EY, in various positions, since 1990.

The iSchool’s convocation ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, May 14, with the undergraduate ceremony from Noon – 1:30 PM, and the graduate ceremony from 3:00 – 4:30 PM. Bouyer will address graduates at both ceremonies. More information on the ceremony is available on the iSchool’s convocation web page. Details on the University-wide commencement ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, May 15, are available on the commencement website.

Dear John,

The article below appeared in the Feb 4th, 2016 Edition of Catholic

“Brother Scanlan Honored with Father Hesburgh Award

Brother Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C, president emeritus of Manhattan College, was honored January 30 with the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities Reverend Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C, Award.

To succeed takes a true team effort and my most critical ability was to say ‘I need your help.’ And I was gratified, both at Bethlehem University and Manhattan College, by extremely positive response of so many talented individuals.” Brother Scanlan said during his acceptance speech.

“I accept this award in the name of all of the members of those teams.”

Brother Scanlan served as the 18th president of Manhattan College, 1987-2009. During his tenure he helped increase enrollment by 120 percent. The college saw a 100 point increase in SAT scores and gained accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council.

Expansions under his leadership included opening of Horan Hall, Lee Hall and Mary Alice and Thomas O’Malley Library.

Brother Scanlan came to Manhattan College from Bethlehem University in Palestine, where he was vice chancellor and chief executive officer. He earlier was director of finance and education for the New York Province of the Brothers of the Christian School also served as principal, vice principal and teacher at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington.

Impossibility Theory, An Advance over Mere Indeterminacy: By Werner Fredsenberg
By Fred Reed
February 6, 2016

*** begin quote ***

The biochemistry is way over my head, but the complexity is clear. The idea that this came about by accident requires powers of belief beyond mine, and the idea that it functions flawlessly for seventy years is more so. Ask a biochemist whether he can construct this system in the laboratory. Ask him whether he can construct any system of similar complexity that will work, maintaining itself, for seventy years.

*** end quote ***

It’s amusing when arguments for “God” come from a strange place.

It’s pretty unbeleivable that this just “evolved”.

But, that’s the only “theory” that we are urged to believe.

Unfortunately, all “theories” and “beliefs” are just like the cavemen looking up at the sky and imagining animals.

We’re probably just a little more advanced in our speculations.

And, every day, humans demonstrate just how dumb and cruel they can be.

Argh!
